Ear Physiology
External Ear • External Ear is covered in skin. • Auricle- collects sound waves (Kinetic Energy) • External Auditory Meatus- Funnels sound to ear drum – Cerumen- (Ear Wax) – Ear hair • Ear Drum
Cerumen • The purpose of wax: – Repels water – Trap dust, sand particles, micro-organisms, and other debris – Keep External Auditory Meatus clear – Odor discourages insects – Antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal properties – Cleanse ear canal
External Ear Care Hazardous to health: • Ear candling • Swabs • Foreign objects
Middle Ear • Ear drum turns Kinetic energy into Mechanical Energy • Energy travels though the 3 bones to the inner ear
Eustacian Tube • Works as a valve that opens and closes when you swallow or yawn – Allows you to “even pressure” – Without this, the pressure outside your ear would cause your Tympanic Membrane to bow inward (effecting ability to hear) • Allows for infection to drain to the back of the nose – Reason why babies get ear infections easily
Inner Ear… • Mechanical Energy is then changed to Hydraulic Energy (impluses the brain can understand) in the Cochlea – Cochlea has tiny hairs (Cilia) that transports the energy – Cochlea is full of liquid – If you were to roll out the cochlea, it would look like a garden hose
…Inner Ear • Semicircular Canals – On the X, Y, and Z axis – Full of fluid that affects your balance – When you spin around, you get dizzy because of your Semicircular Canals • Nerves – Takes info to the brain
