Idaho Mastery Education Network ▶ Eagle Academy is one of 19 schools in Idaho working with IMEN to create a mastery based learning environment

Idaho Mastery Education Network ▶ House Bill 110, passed by the Idaho Legislature during the 2015 session, directed the Idaho State Department of Education (SDE) to move Idaho towards a mastery-based education model. This model will move students away from the current time-based system to a mastery-based system to allow for a more personalized and differentiated learning experience. Idaho Mastery Education Network ▶ Mastery-based education gives students the chance to use meaningful content in ways that encourage deeper levels of learning so they acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions essential for success in the 21 st century. When students demonstrate that they are proficient under rigorous expectations, they take greater ownership and responsibility for learning. Mastery Based Learning ▶ Student learn and master content concepts. They earn credit in courses when they have demonstrated their knowledge and skills based on those concepts ▶ Focus is on learning core concepts and competencies ▶ Allows for flexible learning choices and pacing.

Student driven ▶ Mastery based learning helps students take ownership and responsibility for their education. ▶ They are in the driver’s seat and determine where they will go, how they will get there and when they will arrive.

Choices ▶ Students choose courses they want to work on, how they will learn the concepts and how long it will take them to learn ▶ What to learn: While there are requirements for graduation, students choose which courses they want to focus on and when to complete them ▶ How to learn: Student have access to curriculum online as well as teacher instruction and support allowing for personalized learning opportunities ▶ When to learn: Students decide what they will work on during the day, working from flexible calendar that includes instruction time, work time and tutoring time ▶ Where to learn: Students choose to work where they will be most successful. Classrooms are open to students. They can choose to work in a room with a teacher teaching the subject they are working on, in a room with their mentor, in a room of a teacher they connect with.

Mentor guided ▶ While students are driving their education, mentors are guiding, supporting, encouraging and teaching ▶ Students are part of a small mentoring group with a teacher mentor ▶ Students work with their mentor to set goals, monitor progress in classes, get help with advocating with other teachers or staff ▶ Mentors also are actively teaching soft skills such as goal setting, time management, asking for help, communication and social interaction. ▶ Mentor groups allow opportunities for peer to peer support and encouragement

We are different Traditional High School Eagle Academy ▶ No bells—students manage their time through their calendar ▶ Access to online curriculum ▶ Credits earned based on demonstration of mastery of critical competencies ▶ Self- paced, students determine how long it takes to complete a class ▶ Flexible daily schedule based on teacher instruction time, work time and tutoring time. ▶ Personalized learning focused on individual student needs ▶ Student teacher ratio: 1: 15 ▶ Mentor program matches students with a teacher for support and guidance ▶ Bells tell students to move from class to class ▶ Teachers determine access to curriculum ▶ Credits earned based on at least 60% completion of the course, quality of course work and attendance ▶ School determines beginning and end date for courses ▶ Same daily scheduled based on class periods ▶ Teacher delivers instruction to large class groups ▶ No failing grades, students continue working on content until they reach mastery ▶ Student teacher ratio 1: 35 ▶ No repeated classes due to failing grades ▶ No mentor program ▶ Intentional teaching of soft skills such as work ethic, time management, goal setting and self advocacy

Typical Day Morning classes: Two instructional classes are offered at the beginning of the day. Students attend the classes for curriculum instruction and teacher support. Arena time: Following the classes, students are in their arena with their mentor groups Students: Practice habits of success for learning and growth (goal setting, time management, teamwork, etc. ) Work independently or in small groups to learn content Attend instruction times Work on assignments and projects Content coaches: pull out students for small group instruction go into arenas to work with students. Mentors: teach and reinforce habits of success work with students on curriculum and coursework
