The form of the past perfect simple Interrogative Negative Positive Had you worked? I had not worked. I had worked. You had worked You had not worked had you worked?
NOTE I had not = I hadn't worked I had worked = I‘d worked He had not = He hadn’t worked He had worked = He‘d worked
Examples • Had you finished the job? No, I hadn't finished yet. • Yes, I had already finished. She‘d just finished her job.
Remember The past participle of regular verbs is: Rule Verb + ed Examples play - played visit - visited finish -finished
The past participle of irregular verbs can't be predicted (there is no rule). Here are some examples: Infinitive be come go do meet Simple past was/were came went did met Past participle been come gone done met
The uses of the past perfect simple tense: Use the past perfect tense to show an action that was completed prior to another action that took place in the past. Examples: 1 - He had learned Spanish before he went to Spain. 2 - President Lincoln had attended theater before his assassination in 1865. 3 - They had lunch when I arrived.
