Eruptions • This is an active volcano ( meaning it erupts regularly) • The most recent eruption was in 2006 (2 nd of October) • It also erupted in 1814. This was the most destructive eruption ever. • It has erupted 47 times since 1616. • In 1766 dark ash erupted. • In 1897 it rained fire for 7 days. There was also an eruption in 1984.

Location Mayon volcano is located just outside the capital city of Manila. It is located near the Philippine sea on the island of Luzon. It is part of the Philippines. It’s part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Myths There was a tribal chief(Makusotg). He had a beautiful daughter named Mayon. She was to fall in love with Pagtuga but loved Panganoron instead. The two men fought for Mayon. Then a arrow came, after Pagtuga lost, and it killed Mayon and Panganoron. The father of Mayon then buried them in the same grave which turned into the large volcano Mayon. Her beautiful and unique shape and looks are the way the volcano looks today.

Ways to detect volcanoes We can start by monitoring the number of volcanic eruptions per year. See the change in ground(deformation). We have to know what happens before a volcano erupts. We also can see if the ground has tilted due to magma entering. The crater may glow due to magma near the crater. Rumbling sounds due to gas explosions/ landslides.

Technologies Scientists use many technologies to detect if volcanoes are going to erupt. Seisometers are used to detect earth quakes. Earthquakes occur before volcanoes erupt. Global positioning instruments search the build up of magma. Sensors test the air for gases indicating magma eruption.
