Dear Diary, Some birthday! After the show, I sat here alone. Whilst I appreciate the opportunity to become immersed in my work; carving is a form of escapism for me, the dimly lit caravan hardly feels like somewhere to celebrate! Hidden from view, tucked away from peering eyes. The only time I was really noticed today, was to be laughed at and I know the name calling will haunt my dreams again tonight. As I glance at my woodwork, I can feel the red marks on my neck seem to be getting worse, my skin is sore and close to bleeding. How can Dad think that is ok? I am proud of what I have achieved though. Something, which started by chance, has been my opportunity to shine. This time for the right reasons. I just know I can use this skill to benefit us both. To change our lives.

18/11/79 Dear Diary, It’s my 13 th birthday today; a milestone that most children welcome. But they are children who are able to think about their impending maturity and where their teenage years might to take them. Oh how I envy them. I already know how my first teenage year will pan out. It probably won’t be any different to the last one. Or the one before that. Father brought me a cake- that was nice of him. It was chocolate, my favourite, but then he told me to blow out the candle and make a wish. For a moment I thought “Is he serious? ” before reminding myself that he doesn’t understand this hell I am trapped within. Why does he still not see it? Shouldn’t it have been obvious to him what I wished for? To be free! To be normal! My shoulder aches today. I think I held the chisel awkwardly in my left hand somehow I’ve pulled a muscle- it looks even more distorted and disgusting than usual. I tried to examine it in the mirror but I just couldn’t bear to look at myself for long enough. I have much more to tell you but I shall have to come back later. Father is waiting with the shackles and today’s performance will begin shortly. When will this end? I have so much more to give. Boy.

Once I had warmed up beside the fire, I started to feel a bit

Once I had warmed up beside the fire, I started to feel a bit better and that was when Dad returned home. He had with him a slice of my favourite cake, adorned with a single candle. For a moment, my heart sang! Perhaps I hadn’t been forgotten after all? But that was when it happened. He asked me to make a wish. Inside, I just exploded, how dare he! After all the time I have spent begging, pleading with him to just leave – start a fresh – he asks me to make a wish! He knows what my wish is. To my surprise, I let the anger out. I still can’t believe all I said to him I had never been that angry with my father before.

But the anger melted away as quickly as it had come. I was ashamed and muttered ‘maybe Some wood, ’ quietly under my breath. I looked at my feet to avoid my father’s gaze, but what I saw wasn’t comforting. A tear dropped to the ground. Not one of my own. I had hurt my father. It is not the name calling which will keep me awake tonight but that image. Maybe this year will be better. Maybe this year I will make my escape.
