Dwarfism
What is Dwarfism? Dwarfism can be caused by any of 300 different diseases, most commonly is Achondroplasia. There are 2 types of dwarfism short-trunk and short-limbed. Short-trunk dwarfism is when people have average sized limbs but have a shortened torso. Short-limbed dwarfism is when people have a normal sized torso but have shortened arms or legs. People with achondroplasia have long torsos but shortened upper parts of their legs and arms, on average they are a little over 4 feet.
What causes dwarfism In most cases dwarfism is caused by a genetic mutation given by the father in the sperm or from the mother in the egg. Achondroplasia is caused by a mutation in the FGFR 3 gene. The FGFR 3 gene is the gene that instructs your body to make proteins for bone growth. The mutation causes the protein to be overactive interfering with the development of the skeleton.
Recent Research In 2013 a research team in Europe called Therachon found a possible cure for achondroplasia. They made a protein that they call TA-46 protein. This protein stops the FGFR 3 gene from being over active allowing normal growth to happen. On February 14 th 2018 they announced the dosing of their first subject in the 1 st phase of their trial testing.
