Réchauffement • Trouve l’aire. Rectangle Triangle Cercle
Nets, Surface Area and Volume March 25 th, 2014
Warm-Up • Find the area. Rectangle Triangle Circle
Nets, Surface Area and Volume
Nets • A net is a two-dimensional drawing of a three-dimensional figure. • In a net, we have all of the shapes that are used to construct a solid. When we fold the net, we can obtain the 3 -D object in question.
Difference Between a Net and a Solid Net (2 -D) Solid (3 -D)
Surface Area • Area is the size of the surface. • We know how to calculate the area of various shapes. • Surface area is the total area or the total surface of the solid. Rectangle Triangle Circle
Finding Surface Area • To find the surface area of a three-dimensional figure, use the following steps: 1) Draw a net of the three-dimensional-figure. 2) Find the area of each face of the net. 3) To find the surface area, find the sum of the area of all the faces of the net.
Let’s Practice • 1) Draw the net for the following rectangular prism. • 2) Calculate the surface area. Find the area of each shape in the net. Next, find the sum of the area of all of the faces. All of the shapes are rectangles A = l×w
Let’s Practice • 3 cm 5 cm 4 cm 3 cm Find the area of each shape in the net. Next, find the sum of the area of all of the faces.
Volume
Volume • Volume is the amount of space that is inside a 3 -D object. • To find the volume of any prism, we multiply the area of the base by the height of the prism. • How do we determine the base? ? ? ? Ask yourself : What shape do we stack to form this prism? We used the triangle therefore the base of this prism is the triangle. We need to find the area of the triangle and multiply by the height of the prism.
Let’s Practice V = Area of the base × Height of prism V = Ab × h • 1) Find the volume of the rectangular prism. What shape did we stack to form this prism? Rectangle (therefore a rectangle is the base) Let’s use the one at the bottom as the base. Ab = 6 cm × 4 cm = 24 cm 2 V = Ab × h = 24 cm 2 × 2 cm = 48 cm 3 • 2) Find the volume of the triangular prism. 3 cm 5 cm 4 cm 3 cm
Activity – On your own • Find the volume and the surface area of each solid.
