Duties of Assistant Engineer (In respect of Works: Para 101 of IRWM) The Assistant Engineer is responsible • For the maintenance, execution and safety of all works in his charge, • For the accuracy, quality and progress of new works and • For control over all expenditure in relation to budget allotments.

Knowledge of Rules and Regulations (In respect of Works: Para 103 of IRWM) Ø

Knowledge of Rules and Regulations (In respect of Works: Para 103 of IRWM) Ø Observe the rules and procedures relating to his duties, as laid down in • General and Subsidiary Rules, • Various Manuals such as, the Indian Railways Permanent Way Manual and the Indian Railways Works Manual the Indian Railways Bridge Manual, • Engineering Code • Other Departmental Codes and • Compendiums of Instructions. ; Ø Ensure that all staff under him is acquainted with the relevant rules and working methods concerned and perform their allotted duties efficiently.

Witnessing Payments to Staff (In respect of Works: Para 112 of IRWM) ü Payments to staff shall normally be made through cheques. ü Wherever cash payments are made, the ADEN should witness payments to workmen under one or more Section Engineers every quarter by rotation. This should be done by surprise. Inspection of Offices and Stores of Inspectors (In respect of Works: Para 113 of IRWM) ü Shall carry out inspection of each Section Engineer’s office and stores at least once a year. ü Surplus/inactive items should be identified during such inspections and action for their disposal/redistribution be taken.

The diameter and type of pipelines should be clearly indicated on the plans and on the longitudinal sections.

The relieving officer should study these notes carefully with a view to taking appropriate and timely action after assuming charge. (17) Notes regarding any other items which should be specially known to the relieving officer as early as possible, such as encroachments, law cases, other disputes, etc. (18) Confidential notes on the staff under him.

(b) Shall inspect bridge foundations and substructures.
