Important things first • A big THANK YOU to Dave and Georgia for having led the DAQ consortium through its initial phases - We have a team - We have institutions and funding agencies committed to the project - We have draft chapters for the DUNE TDR • The Proto. DUNEs are a very important playground also for the DAQ 2 - DP getting ready for commissioning and operations with detector - SP taking data continuously and prototyping DAQ software triggering - There will be Proto. DUNEs in 2021/2022 - Commitment from all institutions for operations and support is expected April 30 th, 2019 GLM, DAQ IB Meeting

DUNE Planning • DUNE TDR: July 2019 Review and prepare for endorsement; institutional responsibilities! • Proto. DUNE (SP) Running: 2019 • Proto. DUNE (DP) Running: 2019 -2020 Support and operations • Start of Proto. DUNE-II (SP) Installation: March 2021 • Start of Proto. DUNE-II (DP) Installation: March 2022 Support and operations • South Dakota Logistics Warehouse Available: April 2022 • Beneficial Occupancy of Cavern 1/CUC: October 2022 3 April 30 th, 2019 GLM, DAQ IB Meeting

DAQ Planning • Tight schedule for R&D, design, implementation in parallel with operations and support (Proto. DUNEs) - We are NOT going to have an operations team separated from the development effort • Everybody is requested to contribute to all phases of the project - The biggest challenge for the DUNE DAQ is ensuring very high data taking efficiency for a large and complex system • DAQ consortium is organized around working groups - Work organization is changing after the conceptual design phase - Now focus more on detailed design and development 5 April 30 th, 2019 GLM, DAQ IB Meeting

The DAQ Institutes Board • Important decisions involving resources require the IB endorsement - It is the CL responsibility to ensure that any issue is communicated with sufficient notice for you to check with your respective funding agencies • Official documents shall be endorsed by the IB before release - e. g. TDR DAQ chapters • The CL reports to the IB - Project status and planning - Resources concerns • We propose to nominate an IB chair - Call IB meetings, define agendas, follow up on institutional issues - Frank Filthaut (NL) has agreed to serve as first IB chair 9 April 30 th, 2019 GLM, DAQ IB Meeting

Summary • The DAQ project is moving from a brain storming and conceptual design

Summary • The DAQ project is moving from a brain storming and conceptual design phase into detailed design - Control, configuration and monitoring areas require substantial additional resources of skilled software engineers • Those areas are ideal also for IT students to work on challenging tasks - We are now carefully watching the “Facility” area to make revised cost and effort estimates • Commitments from institutes and funding agencies will be required for the whole of DUNE soon (part of TDR approval process) - At present the aspirational effort communicated for the DAQ is very scattered (+30 institutions) and not well distributed over activities • We will need your help on this, to demonstrate that the DAQ project is sound - Core costing projections seem to be fairly well covered (if all funding proposals get positive response) 10 April 30 th, 2019 GLM, DAQ IB Meeting
