Dunblane Primary School The Daily Mile The daily
Dunblane Primary School The Daily Mile “The daily mile can do more for the health of children than any healthcare system. ” Maureen Bisognano Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
The Impact It is simple It is inclusive of all children It is free, no CPD!! Improves focus The children thrive on being outdoors – experiencing the fresh air, the weather, the sights and the sounds • It’s non-competitive, everyone succeeds • Relationships, sociable • The children are very positive about it and proud of it • • •
Impact cont…. • The children are more resilient • It is safe • It’s quick, 15 mins turn around. • Pupils are fitter and get more out of PE lessons. • Pupils are aware of how the daily mile helps then to stay physically and mentally well. • It’s an afternoon break with a purpose. • It settles some children. 3
You can make curriculum links, but not always! • Do personal marathons. • Daily stats • Run a river, across a continent, complete the Tour de France • Create class rules • Talk about the emotional and physical benefits. • Data Handling • Vocabulary associated with running – (pace, rhythm, co-ordination, confidence, perseverance, relaxation…) • Etc……. 4
The Evidence Parental feedback • Parents are grateful that the school keeps their children fit • Children are sleeping better • Children are eating better • Children talk about their health at home • Parents from two classes contacted us to say that they were not doing the Daily Mile regularly enough 5
The Staff • The children love being outside • Cross-curricular learning benefits – e. g. Maths / Topic work • It supports the rhythm of the classroom and the day • The children’s confidence has increased • Children are focussed and ready to learn when they come back into the classroom • Relationships 6
The Pupils • “The reason I like doing the daily mile is it wakes you up and gets you ready to learn”. Millie • “You get fitter and your legs get stronger. You get lots of fresh air” Amy • “It makes you physically and mentally stimulated and keeps you healthy and fitter and it’s really fun”. Aqib • I like the daily mile as after lunch it gets all stuffy and we get tired so we do the daily mile and then we are nice and fresh” Joel 7
What it will look like at Dunblane Primary School - • New walking tracks • 3 out of 5 days all pupils throughout the school will walk on the track. • We want the staff and pupils to own the walking track. • Include it in your weekly plan. • Pupils should try to go out in all weather. • It is very slick, 15 minute turn around. • The number of laps can be differentiated for year groups, classes. • Term 1 p 7’s might want to go out with p 1 buddies. • No need to get changed or warm up or cool down • Parent mail will be send to parents so pupils come prepared. • Class Challenge – What will we call it? ? All ideas by Friday 28 th August.
And Finally…. . “We now know that physical activity improves concentration, attention, memory, planning and a host of abilities that are fundamental to educational success. We also know that activity is particularly valuable in fuelling brain processes that underlie maths and reading. ” ‘Active Kids do better’ Dr Richard Bailey 9
