Meeting outcomes: During this meeting, we will: • Identify the core purpose of mathematics education at the middle school level • Describe the importance of Algebra 1 and it’s implication for graduation • Address selection criteria for 2019 -2020 scheduling decisions Time is allotted for Q&A by DMS math faculty at the end of the presentation 2
The Dumbarton Math Team 6 th grade: • Mr. Lovett, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Hegmann, Mr. Sievers 7 th grade: • Mr. Taylor, Mr. Sievers, Ms. Noppinger, Mr. Wood 8 th grade: • Mr. Russell, Ms. Sharbonda, Ms. Noppinger, Ms. Ninos 3
Our Vision: Who are we? BCPS Office of Mathematics Pre. K-12 • The middle school mathematics curriculum continues to Build the Foundation by capitalizing on students' strengths and interests to introduce them to how mathematics can be used as a tool and a language in the various STEM and Humanities fields. • The high school mathematics curriculum provides time to Fortify the Foundation by solidifying students' readiness for post secondary mathematics courses and opportunities that rely on a strong understanding and application of mathematical concepts and skills. Dumbarton Middle: • Develop a community of confident problem solvers who have an appreciation for mathematics and who grow as mathematicians. Algebra 1 Curriculum • Linear Functions Quantities and Relationships Graphs, Equations, Linear Functions, and Inequalities Analyzing Data Sets for Two Quantitative Variables Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities • Quadratic Functions Graphs of Quadratic Functions Polynomial Expressions and Solving Quadratic Equations • Exponential Functions Sequences and the Graphs of Linear and Exponential Functions • Other Functions Piecewise and Step Functions • Data Analysis Analyzing Data Sets for One Variable Analyzing Data Sets for Two Categorical Variables 7
Homework Assigned, not scored, for practice • Yes! We still assign homework. • Math 6 → Mon & Weds • GT 6 → preview reading & notes • Pre. Algebra → 3 x a week • Algebra 1 (GT 7 and 8 th grade) → 4 -5 x a week with graded assignments. 8
Implications for Scheduling How do we make decisions on scheduling? • Incoming 6 th graders • Based on 5 th grade teacher recommendations • Current students • Current & previous MAP scores* • Previous PARCC scores • Student progress, reviewed twice during the school year • Includes in-class assignments 9
Implications for Scheduling 7 th Grade: Pre. Algebra vs. Algebra 1 • GT 7: Algebra 1 • Same course as 8 th graders and 9 th graders take • PARCC • Pre. Algebra 7 • “Accelerated” pace – covers 1. 5 years of content in one year • Emphasis on building capacity for algebraic thinking, proportional reasoning • Additional Assistance elective offered: Students selected by 6 th grade teachers; identified as strong in 6 th grade but may benefit from additional support for rigor of 7 th grade 10
Implications for Scheduling 8 th Grade: Math 8, Algebra 1, Geometry • GT 8: Geometry • Follows course progression per BCPS • Successful completion of Algebra 1 in 7 th grade • Algebra 1 • PARCC requirement fulfilled • Opportunity to enroll for Advance Academics available* • Math 8 • • Covers first unit of Algebra 1 Revisits statistics and geometry Emphasis on advancing algebraic thinking Preparation for success in Algebra 1 and beyond Algebra 1 readiness: • MAP score 235 (+/-) or higher • PARCC score of “ 3” or higher 11
