DUAL ENROLLMENT Program Overview

WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT ? The Dual Enrollment gives qualified high school students ( 9 th – 12 th grade) the opportunity to earn college credits. Students are “concurrently” enrolled in high school and college (a postsecondary institution), full time or part time. Students earn both college and high school credits needed for graduation while working toward a college degree.

WHERE CAN I ATTEND? • University System Of Georgia Institutions • Technical College System of Georgia Institutions • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Accredited Private Colleges in Georgia

WHAT ABOUT TRANSFER CREDIT? It is the student’s responsibility to talk with colleges/universities regarding their Dual Enrollment policies. Georgia Public institutions tend to honor credit earned at any other Georgia public institution provided the student earned a grade of “C” or higher. Private colleges and out of state colleges vary on their acceptance of Dual Enrollment credit.

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS • Must be classified as a 9 th, 10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grader at Norcross High School • Must apply to and be admitted by an accepted post secondary institution • NO residency or citizenship requirements • Participate through Spring of your senior year • Take summer classes

HOW DOES GRADING WORK? ü Colleges tend to provide the high school with letter grades. The high school will transcribe the letter grade to the midpoint of the grading scale. A = 95 B = 85 C = 77 D = 72 F = 55 ü End of Course Tests (EOCs) NO LONGER REQUIRED beginning Fall, 2016. ü Failing a college course could jeopardize graduation and continued participation in the program! ü No points added to the final grade (exception – 10 pts. added to Georgia Tech’s distance learning program. ü All courses (passed ü or failed) are included on the high school transcript.

FULL TIME OR PART TIME? WHICH IS BETTER FOR ME? A student may choose to attend an institution full time or part time. Part time? Take at least one college course. Combine with classes at Norcross – best not to exceed six. Full time? Minimum of four college courses (between 12 – 15 credit hours). Take Academic and/or Elective courses. Take Personal Fitness(full)and/or Health (full/part)!

HOPE and ZELL MILLER SCHOLARSHIPS • Dual Core courses – included in your HOPE high school GPA for both HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships • Dual Core courses – meet Academic Rigor Requirements. • Dual Core courses - weighted 0. 5 • Dual courses ARE NOT PAID FOR by HOPE – cap of 127 hours unaffected!

GRADE CONVERSON ► 1 - 2 semester hour college courses =. 5 HS credit. ► 3 - 5 semester hour college courses = 1. 0 HS credit. NOTE: Science labs will not receive credit. Labs cannot count towards the 4 th science requirement. ***Science courses taken at the college should include a lab in order to count as a 4 th science for graduation

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS? PROS CONS • Students get a head start on college. • Tuition and books are provided (student may have to pay course related fees). • Courses offered Fall, Spring, and Summer. • Enroll in more than one postsecondary institution. • Keeping up with Norcross High School information. • Rigor? AP/IB versus college courses. • 95% course grade versus a possible 110% in AP or IB. • Colleges communicate with DUAL students, NOT parents. • Transportation • “W” or “WF” on transcripts

BE AWARE!!! ü Students must meet the respective post secondary institution’s entrance requirements. ü Students must register for the correct courses that satisfy high school graduation requirements. ü Students must review the list of approved courses - DUAL course directory located on the GAFutures. org webpage. ü Students are responsible for ALL interaction with the college. Colleges tend not to speak with parents or the local high school’s DUAL Coordinator. ü Post secondary schedule changes of any kind must be approved by the High School Coordinator. ü Holidays (Spring Break, etc. ) will be different from Gwinnett County holidays. ü Register for the equivalent of 2. 5 credits if participating in NHS extracurricular activities each semester.

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE Must be a Norcross High School student The student and parent must attend an advisement meeting or session – this meeting counts! Male students must meet the federal selective service registration requirements. Students must apply to and be accepted by the institution (college, university, technical college). Upon acceptance, the student must meet with the High School Dual Enrollment coordinator to complete the Dual Enrollment Student Participation Agreement. Next , the student completes his/her part of the Dual Enrollment electronic application on GAFutures

GEORGIA GWINNETT COLLEGE ► www. ggc. edu – search Dual Enrollment ► GPA Requirement – 3. 0 Core ► New SAT minimum – 480– Reading 460 – Math (970 combined) ► ACT minimum – 20 Composite score ► Juniors or seniors only

Gwinnett Technical College www. gwinnetttech. edu • Search Dual Enrollment • Can be a 9 th, 10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grader! • Enroll in Diploma or Associate Degree level programs • SAT, ACT, or COMPASS – see website for minimum scores for Certificates versus Diploma versus Degree programs. • Preferred 3. 0 Core GPA
