Why Set Goals? • It is important for us to set goals so that we can better improve our health, relationships, family, life, safety, fitness, and help us prevent injury. • Can you think of any other reasons why someone might set goals?
The Benefits of Setting Goals • Goals help you figure out what you want out of life. • They help you use your time, energy, and other resources wisely. • Setting goals and sticking with them can inspire others to do so too. • Your peers may admire you for your success. • This will inspire you to set new goals once you have achieved your other goals.
Types of Goals • Short term goals: Goals you want to achieve in the next few days or weeks. Often, these goals help you achieve long term goals. • Long term goals: take months to years to achieve. Examples include: becoming a basketball player with no previous experience, losing mass amounts of weight.
The Goal Setting Process • • • 1. Identify a specific goal and WRITE IT DOWN 2. List the steps you will take to reach the goal 3. Get help and support from others Set up checkpoints to evaluate your progress Give yourself a reward once you have achieved your goal

The Decision Making Process • • The decision making process involves 6 steps. Step 1: State the Situation Step 2: List the options Step 3: List the possible outcomes Step 4: Consider values Step 5: Make a decision and act Step 6: Evaluate the decision
H. E. L. P. • Always remember to follow the H. E. L. P. criteria to keep you focused on critical issues. • H (Healthful) Will it contribute to your health? • E (Ethical) Does it show respect for your health and others? • L (Legal) Is someone your age allowed to do this by law? • P ( Parent approval) Would your parents approve?
Evaluate Your Decision • Evaluate: determine the value of something. • Ask these questions to determine if you made the right decision. • What was the outcome of my decision? Was it what I expected? • How did my decision make me feel about myself? • How did my decision affect others? • What did I learn? Would I make the decision again?
Make the best decision Allison and Ethan are shopping at the mall and Allison sees a top she really likes. She realizes that she doesn’t have enough money to afford it. Ethan tells her that the store she is in doesn’t have detectors on the way out the door and she could hide it in her purse in the fitting room and never get caught. He even tells her he had a friend who got away with taking a hat from that same store. He says to her “this store is overpriced anyways, there basically robbing you by asking you to pay that much money, so you should definitely take it. ” What should Allison do?
