DRAWING REFLECTIVE OBJECTS Objectives: • To learn how to draw bottles accurately; • To learn to use chalk pastels, white charcoal pencils, and erasers on black paper to give the illusion of 3 -D glass. • To understand the concept of drawing glass through glass; • To demonstrate how to draw colored water to look as if it’s inside the glass container; • To use refraction to portray a paintbrush inside a glass filled with water.

What’s wrong with this bottle? Let’s talk about it… Top: Ellipse is too round…should be more oval if viewed from lower perspective. Neck: Lines are straight but should be curvy. “Shoulders” Why are they shrugging? They should be sloped. Bottom: drawn flat…Should be rounded.

Reflective Qualities of Transparent Glass Bottles Surfaces

Reflective Qualities: Glass is clear but is reflective of what is around it. Look for: Soft High-Lights: • Softer edges • Duller in value • Larger, Less defined areas Hard High-Lights: • Harder edges • Brighter in value • smaller, more defined areas

Assignment: • Draw a bottle first in line with pencil on black paper… Don’t forget to measure! • Use the white chalk or charcoal and draw soft high lights… Paying attention to defining the edges. • Use the charcoal pencil to shade more precise hard high lights • Use your eraser to carve out darker values and clean edges.

Refractive Qualities in Glass

You will be drawing 3 bottles together, showing overlap. How do you do this? • Show only an indication of the bottle in the back. If you show too much, the viewer is confused. • On the front bottle, make a clear edge with chalk pastel or an eraser to show it is in front. • Ask yourself “Which bottle is whiter /cloudier? Add more chalk to that one and make the opposite

The key to drawing or painting glass is not to render the actual glass object but to render the way the glass distorts and reflects the objects around it.

This is an example of REFRACTION.

More refraction/distortion

The other thing to remember is that glass is reflective. This means that shapes and objects in front of the glass may be seen in it, but it also means that there will be bright highlights. These highlights are what communicate the shiny, reflective nature of the glass

What did Janet Fish do to be able to show one glass is in front of the other? Sometimes as artists, we need to add weighted line to make an object stand out. Other times we need to make one object darker and the other lighter to be able to make the still life clearer and more appealing.


What to remember when drawing transparent objects: • Draw shape accurately. • Make the soft highlights. • Find shadows • They look grayish, greenish, or blueish. • Can also look very CLEAR (Not cloudy) • Find reflections (bright highlights). • Look for refraction/distortion.

Now onto drawing glasses with colored water! Discuss with tablemates: 1. How many ellipses do you see? 2. Where are they? 3. What is the difference between them?

Discuss with tablemates…. 1. Compare #1 to the model. Name one big difference. 2. Compare #2 to the model. Name at least 2 differences. 3. Compare #3 to the model and name the main difference.
