Structure 1. Leaders often lack the intuitive qualities which can be effectively developed through reflective journaling 2. Main choices in journal format 3. New insights from recent work with executives

Framing: benefits 1. Reflectivity gap: the 6 intuitive qualities 2. If the sketchbook is an attractive place, it helps in finding the time to be in that place 3. A sketchbook can host a very wide range of stimuli 4. The unfamiliarity of the place is a disruption and can support unlearning 5. There are very few places for managerial playfulness and exploring personal tensions. This is one of them 6. Scanning provides backup, digitality and the chance to share and repurpose.
Chester Journaling Events for managers 2018 Our current R&D interest: ssing acrylic paint and credit card to create imaginative pre-preparation of blank journal pages
Working with executives: lessons • Importance of framing as artful and art-based • Much of the benefits comes from stimulating motivation and attentiveness by their making an attractive space where they want to spend time • Then actively motivated to making that time for reflection • Place to be with oneself
Art-based • Following in the tradition of playful sketchbooks • Encourage a place that is aesthetically pleasing to the author even if not artistic to others • Pride in own distinctive work, which challenges the impersonality of Office Software.
Conclusion • There is both scope and need to expand the use of reflective methods in management education at all levels, including executive education • There is a spectrum of approaches – first year undergraduates are likely to require semistructured approaches; MBA and executives can often cope well with the blank page of an artist's sketchbook • Artful managerial reflection needs to be as mainstream as statistics and economics, if not more so given the present reflectivity deficit
