“Dracula” Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1 • Jonathan goes to Castle Dracula in a town called Transylvania. • A house keeper’s wife gives Jonathan a crucifix to protect himself. • The sound of wolves are constant • Dracula is buying a house in England Jonathan is there to finish the sale. • Dracula is acting unusual and he has no reflection in the mirror (which he throws out the window).

Chapter 2 • Jonathan is instructed by Dracula to write letters home, saying that he will be there for a while longer. • He later sees Dracula crawling face first down the side of the castle at night. • Jonathan meets Dracula’s brides for the first time and is almost eaten. He also realises that Dracula is a vampire

Chapter 3 • Jonathan sees gypsies unloading wooden boxes in the courtyard but he cannot get to them to escape. • However, moving about the castle, Jonathan stumbles upon Dracula sleeping in his coffin and realises that he cannot leave until Dracula is destroyed.

Chapter 4 • In England, Mina discovers Lucy sleep walking. • Mina follows Lucy and sees a dark shape looming over her. • Mina contacts her professor Van Helsing of Amsterdam to find out why Lucy is acting strange and who the dark figure is.

Chapter 5 • Lucy was getting better but then her health declined. • Van Helsing returned to England • He gave Lucy a bouquet of garlic flowers to keep by her bed • Van Helsing also gave orders for Lucy to be guarded at all times

Chapter 6 • The doctor did not like the idea of the garlic flowers but followed Van Helsing’s instructions any way. • Dr. Jack Seward was attacked by Renfield (a mad man) who slashed the doctor’s arm and drank his blood. • Mrs Westernra was an old woman and she died from shock of seeing something bad that broke her window. • Lucy gets turned into a vampire

Chapter 7 • Lucy hunts children to drink their blood. • Van Helsing and Seward await near her coffin for her return. • They need to cut off her head and fill it with garlic, then drive a stake through her heart.

Chapter 8 • Arthur, Lucy’s fiancé, is taken to the graveyard to witness for himself that Lucy is a vampire. • They get Lucy back into her tomb and shut the door. • Van Helsing puts the Host (holy wafer/bread) at the entrance so she cannot escape and then they wait for morning. • At sunrise, Arthur did the job of driving the stake into Lucy’s heart to free her immortal soul.

Chapter 9 • Jonathan returns to London and he and Mina meet with Van Helsing. • They all catch up on the events that have occurred. • Mina was not allowed to travel with the group of men to go and hunt Dracula • The men go to Dracula’s house in England but only find 29 boxes.

Chapter 10 • They go back to Dracula’s house in England place holy wafer in the boxes there. • The vampires cannot return to their resting place because of the wafer. • Renfield is killed after a fatal hit to the head • The men run to Mina’s room and find Dracula there, making Mina into a vampire but they are interrupted so it doesn’t happen

Chapter 11 • The men head to London to destroy the boxes the vampires came in. • Only the death of Dracula can save Mina • They head on to Transylvania and find the coffin that has Dracula in it. • Van Helsing drives a stake through Dracula and Mina is saved
