DR. RICHARD MADDOX • • • Bath, England in August, 1816. English physician, worked on photomicrography and wrote on various photographic topics. 1871 - greatest contribution to photography was made. Charles Bennett and others made gelatin dry plates for sale. 1901 - Received the Royal Photographic Society’s Progress Medal.
DISCOVERY IN 1850 • • 1857 - Dr Richard Hill Norris formed the Birmingham Dry Collodion Plate Company. Long exposure times were required for the dry plates, so wet plates continued to be used for a further twenty years.
DISCOVERY IN 1870 • 1871 - Richard Leach Maddox suggested that silver bromide held in a layer of gelatin should be used in preference to collodion for coating dry plates. • Joseph Wilson Swan - also credited with having invented the dry plate. • 1878 - Dry gelatin plates began to be produced in large numbers, following experiments by J Burgess and Richard Kennett, and discovery by
THE DRY PLATE • Dry Plate - A former photographic method that used a glass plate coated with a light-sensitive gelatinous emulsion. • Also known as Gelatin Bromide.
THE DRY PLATE • They brought convenience to photographers. • Since Gelatin plates were made in factories, standardization of materials were introduced to photography.
LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY • Considerably simplified the process of taking photographs, particularly landscapes.
EXPOSING THE PLATE 1. Put the dry plate, in its plate holder, into a camera. 2. Slide the cover from the plate holder, to uncover the dry plate. 3. Uncover then re-cover the lens. 4. Slide the cover on the plate holder back over the dark slide. 5. Remove the plate holder from the camera and take home for processing.
