EQUATIONS Have AN = SIGN An equation is like a balance scale because it shows that two quantities are equal. What you do to one side of the equation must also be done to the other side to keep it balanced.

We need to get the “x” ALONE! 1. Identify which number is with the “x”. 2. Which operation ( +, -, x, ) is attaching the number to the “x”? 3. Use the Opposite Operation to remove the number. Opposites Rule – to get rid of a term from either side of an equation, just do the opposite operation.

Solving one-step equations: To undo an operation, use the OPPOSITE OPERATION + – x

Solving one-step equations: To undo an operation, use the OPPOSITE OPERATION + – x ÷ – + ÷ x

Example 1 Solving an addition equation: t + 7 = 21 Get rid of

Example 1 Solving an addition equation: t + 7 = 21 Get rid of the 7 by subtracting 7 from both sides of the equation. t + 7 = 21 -7 t = 14 -7

Example 2 Solving a subtraction equation: g – 6 = 40 Get rid of

Example 2 Solving a subtraction equation: g – 6 = 40 Get rid of the 6 by adding its opposite to both sides of the equation. g – 6 = 40 +6 g = 46 +6

Example 3 Solving a multiplication equation: 8 n = 32 Get rid of the

Example 3 Solving a multiplication equation: 8 n = 32 Get rid of the 8 by dividing both sides of the equation by 8. Here we “undo” multiplication by doing the opposite – division. 8 n = 32 8 8 n=4

Example 4 Solving a division equation: -3 x = 21 Get rid of the

Example 4 Solving a division equation: -3 x = 21 Get rid of the -3 by Dividing both sides by -3. “Undo” division with multiplication. x = -7
