An interesting teaching strategy used recently • In response to the Covid-19 and lockdown, I engaged in a community of practice with other faculty that supported continuous reflection and learning to re-think pedagogy for students. This lead to greater peer-teaching and collaboration, knowledge generation and sharing, critical reflection, publication and curriculum development going forward. Current interesting project • Rethinking the curriculum – content and pedagogy – for online delivery supported by QTL/BDL Ed Techs.

Experience as a participant & facilitator MEET WITH AKU Current Role: Edu Background: • Re-ignited my passion for teaching, and has inspired me professionally to teach in more innovative ways. Helped in the professional advancement and development of my colleagues through the TEACH scheme, which has been very satisfying. • Teaching is way to contribute to society. Each student can impact many more in turn. • I enjoy teaching the art of medicine. With time, I have realized that medicine is much more than drugs and operations-it is communication, empathy, the drive for excellence. Current interesting project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • I am interested in the use of simulation as a teaching strategy, and I have started to use 2 modalities of simulation together in a session. For e. g, the use of a simulated patient for counselling and consent training, followed by an endoscopy on a simulator. This process is called hybrid simulation. • Arranging a grant for an inter-professional certificate course in the teaching and training of health care professionals in the management of hepatitis in Pakistan. This disease is a huge source of morbidity and mortality in our country, and I hope to train a health workforce in innovative ways for them to train others in the fight for a hepatitis free Pakistan.

Experience as a participant & facilitator MEET WITH AKU Current Role: • Enjoyed as a participant of TLEW. • Facilitated one of the RTT workshop , which I found very enlightened. CHAMPIONS • Facilitated TEACH workshop, preparing faculty for HEA Fellow ship. • Facilitated several online sessions. • • An interesting teaching strategy used recently I am a great believer in lifelong learning. • I teach research to midwifery students. I have learnt a great deal from students in East Africa. • I frequently use "fear in a hat" this allows students to write anonymously about their fears and place them in a hat. I have been described as a nurturer as I like to see students grow. As a midwifery academic, I have always maintained my clinical skills. • These fears are read out by another students and then we can discuss it openly. Current interesting project • Online teaching has been a revelation to me. • I have learnt that it is much more than just pasting Power. Point slides and talking through them. • I have learnt how to use chat rooms, Mentimeter, Kahoot and online discussion forums which I am busily implementing for my midwifery students.

Dr Muhammad Zia ul Islam MEET WITH AKU TEACHING CHAMPIONS Current Role: Consultant Edu Background: MBBS, FRCS(PLAST), FCPS(SURG) Entity/ location: AKUH-Karachi Experience as a participant & facilitator What does teaching mean to you? • Fantastic experience • I have learnt quite a few skills from the QTL_net team and have tried new learning successfully in my online teaching, For example Kahoot, Quizzes, Padlet, Mural. • Teaching is an essential part of my own personal development. • Teaching builds a very strong social link with the residents who then become future colleagues. • My objective are uniform learning experience for everyone and affordable learning. Current interesting project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • I have started a weekly plastic surgery live quiz that is attended by students from all over Pakistan and some from outside Pakistan. I have found it to be a very thrilling activity as well as a super incentive to read and learn. • I am planning a series of core curriculum tutorials for plastic surgery residents across the globe. These lectures will cover the entire plastic surgery curriculum over a 1 year period. • I am trying to engage the top international faculty for this project.

Experience as a participant & facilitator MEET WITH AKU Current Role: • The Blended Learning Programme prepared me to use the Virtual Learning Platform effectively and bring creativity in my teaching at higher education level. Attending Boot Camps, Ed. Tech Longues and ongoing online sessions to enhance online pedagogies and learn new strategies. • I personally believe that teaching is to facilitate students’ learning through designing leaning activities to achieve the learning outcomes. Current interesting Project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • I developed a welcome video for my first asynchronous teaching using the photos of students taken before Covid on Panopto Software. • I welcomed each student calling out their names in the welcome video and I found that my students felt so happy to see their picture and heard their names. • Teaching online/remote teaching during this pandemic motivated me to learn and design innovative activities. The most interesting activities is designing teaching mathematical concepts using virtual manipulates for Certificate in Mathematics teaching programme.

Experience as a participant & facilitator MEET WITH AKU Current Role: • My quest for innovative teaching learning strategies were fulfilled at QTL_net. • I got to learn best practices as a participant, shared my ideas and got feedback for improvement and later as facilitator conducted workshops. • • Teaching for me is a way to explore innovative methods and help learners understand the intricate concepts so that they can become lifelong learners. Current interesting project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • One recent strategy that I tried was the use of ‘online mind mapping’ in my teaching session. • Students loved the fact that not only were they able to learn a complex concept but were also able to showcase their creativity in designing the map. • Recently, I am redesigning and testing the team based learning pedagogy as an online modality along with e-assessments for medical students. • Will be happy to share the details during our talk.

Current interesting project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • • Teaching argumentation through Socio-Scientific Issues where mode of argumentation varied from oral to written. Students’ learning was scaffolded through classroom discussions, defining and exemplifying arguments, encouraging ideas and positioning, valuing different positions and reflecting on arguments. • Issue: students’ anxiety over quantitative analysis • Strategy: a careful selection of relevant dataset, close monitoring and peer support during the process help generate lively discussions and debates. • Outcome: The strategy has served as an effective learning experience for students to become at least user of quantitative literature.

I have been engaged in almost all programmes of QTL_net (TLEW, and FDW). My keen interest in Teaching and Learning has always kept me waiting for exciting opportunities of participation in sharing/learning and relearning. • To me, teaching is to engage learners in learning. • I believe learning is at the heart of every teaching move. • I consider learners as coconstructors of knowledge so here again teaching is partly learning for both coconstructors of knowledge. Current interesting project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • • During online teaching, I introduced ‘Meet and Greet’ using Padlet where students had to greet each other and share one reason to be grateful in this uncertain/stressful time. Student Evaluation of Learning (SET) pointed to this important social presence of peers. Appreciating the human element in the online teaching and learning. • • I am actively engaged in ensuring high standards of teaching and learning especially in times of COVID-19 pandemic. This allowed me to continually reflect-back and forwards to approach the Fall semester using the evidence-base from our teaching and learning during June and July 2020 to complete the remaining part of Winter semester.

Experience as a participant & facilitator MEET WITH AKU Current Role: Edu Background: • My experience with QTL_net’s educational workshops and other courses has been exceptionally wonderful as it refine my teaching philosophy and sharpen my teaching skills. • Teaching is to nurture students that create love and enthusiasm for a lifelong learning. • I believe that a teacher serves as a mentor to their students. • • I believe that teaching is a dual process where teacher and learner learn in collaboration through exchange of knowledge. I have been more reflective and critical in my thinking. Current interesting project An interesting teaching strategy used recently • To ensure quality education during Covid crisis, I was involved in introducing virtual community based clinical simulation for the first time ever in the university and achieved a significant milestone. • In Advanced Community Clinical Nursing course were offered this innovative educational pedagogy to learn about community based disaster preparedness. • Engaged in a research project, it is mixed methods design that determines the effectiveness of simulation strategy in improving confidence, satisfaction level and communication of undergraduate students regarding community health nursing clinical skills and explore their experiences regarding learning community health nursing skills through simulation modality.
