DQ Explaindescribe the differences between a permanent magnet
DQ Explain/describe the difference(s) between a permanent magnet and an electromagnet (contrast them).
Science Activity: Stnd 01 Date 10/16 Standard 01: 8. PS 2. 1 Magnetism and Electricity Design and conduct an investigation about magnetism and electricity. Examine factors that increase or diminish the electric current and the magnetic field strength. Key Focus: Science and Engineering Practice(s) Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering) Key Focus: Crosscutting Concept Recognize cause and effect relationships Investigation: Construct and test an electromagnet I can… • Describe how an electromagnet is made. • Investigate ways to change the strength of an electromagnet. • Describe cause and effect relationships of electromagnets.
Iron Core Solenoid Source of Electricity Electromagnets can be turned on and off as needed You can adjust the strength of an electromagnet two ways 1) Increase or decrease the electrical current 2) Increase or decrease the number of coils
Electromagnets: Three Main Components (1) Solenoid (2) Iron Core (3) Source of Electricity Identify the 3 Components

Construct an Electromagnet • In your lab groups you will build an electromagnet and answer the questions on your worksheet. • Each member of your lab group is responsible for filling out their own worksheet. • Each lab group will have a bag of materials. • Be careful holding the wire to the battery for long periods of time. The battery will get HOT. • When your lab group completes the lab, one member of your group will turn the worksheet into your class period drawer. What cause and effect connection do you observe regarding the number of coils and the strength of the magnetic field?
Exit Ticket As a lab group, write down at least one example of a cause and effect relationship shown in the electromagnet lab. • • Each group will post one sticky note on the board. Make sure your names and class period are on your sticky note.
