DPUK Sensing Platform Matt Machin m. Health Applications Manager Health e. Research Centre University of Manchester
m. Health Team Overview • We apply mobile technologies to health research • Work as integrated part of the research team • Have experience of developing smartphone apps, web-based interfaces (e. g. for clinicians); integrating with wearable devices, medical devices and EHRs
Main Projects • Clin. Touch – Platform technology for longitudinal data collection. Initially for Severe Mental Illness (SMI) then applied to RA • CFHealth. Hub – Supporting adherence to treatment in adults with CF • Actissist – CBT for SMI patients • DPUK – Sensing platform for dementia
Involvement in DPUK • Were invited into the Informatics theme of the DPUK project • 2 nd wave of MRC funding focused on Clinical Research Infrastructure • John Ainsworth led a theme on “high resolution data from everyday life”
Sensing Platform Intro • Wearables have the potential to improve care for people with long-term health conditions such as dementia • The Problem: The effort involved in collecting and storing the data is significant – Requires expertise – Time and money
Platform Overview • Hardware and software platform to support future dementia research using wearable technologies • Support as many different projects as possible • Support a wide range of device types
Implementation • Allows collection and storage of highresolution longitudinal data • Is generic and ‘device-agnostic’ • Architecture is flexible to allow for future modifications
Platform Architecture 3 rd Party System Data seamlessly transmitted Setup Study Uo. M DPUK Server Integrated data Data upload
Key Functionality • Central repository for storing data associated with large number of studies • Can receive data from: – Mobile devices – 3 rd party systems – Manual upload - e. g. pre-existing data or devices without Internet connectivity • Easy study setup and management via webbased interface
Future Research • Often driven by clinical need, therefore clinician rather than technology led • Research collaborations that use the platform • Wearable devices for medical applications?
