That is approximately 6, 000 babies a year. • There are 3 types of Down Syndrome. : • Trisomy 21 where each cell in the body has 3 copies of the 21 st chromosome. • Translocation Down Syndrome occurs when an extra part or a whole extra chromosome 21 is present, but it is attached or “translocated” to a different chromosome rather than being a separate chromosome 21. • Mosaic Down Syndrome occurs when only some of the cells in the body have 3 copies of the 21 st chromosome and others have 2 copies. • Down Syndrome can be detected before birth by using Chorionic villus sampling, Amniocentesis, and cord blood testing. After birth genetic tests can be ordered.
