ABOUT DOWN SYNDROME • This disease is caused by the presence of sometimes all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. • It is usually known with physical growth delays, characristics facial features, and some intellectual disability. • Down Syndrome is the most common chromosome abnormality.
• Down Syndrome is not sex linked it’s a mutation in the chromosomes. • There is still no medication for Down Syndrome but scientist are working on making medicine. • They claim that even if they can’t find a cure they can help make the disease affect them less. • Screening shots can estimate the percentage that you're child could get Down Syndrome.
GENETIC COUNSELING • Genetic counseling is not an option for kids with Down Syndrome. • The reason for this is because Down Syndrome is not a disease that is passed on it’s a mutation when one extra chromosome is added.
FUN FACTS • Exact cause of the extra chromosome that triggers Down Syndrome is unknown. • There are more than 400, 000 people living with Down Syndrome in the US. • It is estimated that about 5, 000 children are born with Down Syndrome in the US only. • Roughly 25 % of families in the US are affected by Down Syndrome.
