History § Founded in 1897 by a Canadian chemist, Herbert Henry Dow. § Began in Midland, Michigan after Dow found a new way to extract bromine from underground water. § First commercially produced product was bleach. § During World War II, Dow helped produce magnesium and synthetic rubber. § Patented Styrofoam § During the Vietnam War, they were the sole producer of napalm to the military.
Statistics § § § Yearly Revenue, 49 billion dollars. 42, 000 + employees in 2006 They are currently the second largest chemical company in the world.
Products § World’s largest producer of plastics including polystyrene, polyurethanes, polyethylene, polypropylene, and synthetic rubbers. § They produce large amounts of agricultural chemicals, including pesticides. One subsidy company, Herculex, makes chemicals that help control rootworms.
Termite Control § Dow owns a system for eliminating termites, called Sentricon. § Chemicals are immersed in a food that termites like to eat. § The chemicals are injected into the ground through tubes. § The termites take the food back to the colonies, and the colony is thus destroyed. § This way works well because there is no destruction of the house or surrounding area.
Consumer Products § Created and owns Styrofoam brand. § Used to own both Saran Wrap and Ziploc, but those have been sold. § However, though Dow produces tons of chemicals, most of them aren’t directly sold to consumers. They produce chemicals that are used in a variety of products from shampoo to paper.

Company Outlook In Europe, Dow is facing increasing pressure to conform to better to EU regulations. Goals by 2015: 1. 25% reduction in energy use 2. 75% reduction accidents and safety concerns 3. 2. 5% annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. High energy costs could hurt Dow’s sales.
