Double Object Pronouns We have looked at both

Double Object Pronouns

We have looked at both Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns and learned that we place them either directly before a conjugated verb or attach them to an infinitive. But what happens when we have both direct and indirect object pronouns in one sentence? Who goes where?

Let's take a look at an example: Yo te doy el dinero a ti. Both object pronouns must come before the active/conjugated verb. But which comes first? Yo Doy subject pronoun"I" our conjugated verb"I'm giving" El dinero Te, a Ti (informal you) direct objectit's Indirect what I'm giving. object Pronoun, Indire "The money" is ct Object receiving the direct "YOU" are receiving action of the verb. the money! (indirect benefit of my action/verb)

The Indirect object pronoun will ALWAYS come first. An easy way to remember this is to think of I. D. (Indirect Object, Direct Object). So, our entire sentence from the last slide can be converted into this three-word sentence using both an Indirect and a Direct object pronoun: Te lo doy. IO DO VERB

Let's look at another example: El policía nos lleva las direcciones a nosotros. First, we'll identify the different components of the sentence: If we follow the ID rule, our final sentence is: El policía nos las lleva. SUBJECT IO DO VERB. El policía The subject lleva the verb las direcciones the direct object. We use the pronoun las. nos, a nosostros the indirect object. The pronoun nos is already in the sentence

But (of course!) we have a small exception. Let's look at this sentence: Juan le escribe una carta a María. So our sentence is: *Juan le la escribe. Unfortunately, we cannot leave this sentence as it is with two "L" object pronouns together. So our original sentence, "*Juan le la escribe" must change to----> "Juan se la escribe. " Juan escribe una carta le, a María Subject verb Direct object We replace the DO with la since una carta is singular and feminine Indirect object. The singular 3 rd pronoun, le, is already there

Here is one way to remember the exception: 1) Only Eric Clapton sings Layla (le la) or Laylas (le las). 2) Only criminals Lay low (le lo). 3) Spanish speakers "Say" la/las and "Say" lo/los (se la, se las, se los) Let's try another example: Yo le pido los discos a mi hermano --> Yo se los pido.

Clarifiers We have the option of retaining or removing the Indirect Object "tag" : Yo se los pido a mi hermano. Yo se los pido.

Practicar Rewrite 9. using double pronouns Sergio le compra unas flores. 10. María les enseña el libro. 11. Ana nos va a traer la comida.

Respuestas Sergio se las compra María se lo enseña Ana nos la va a traer

Double Object Pronouns Attached to Infinitive Verbs When using an infinitive with double pronouns, both pronouns must remain next to each other. When using double pronouns, the Indirect Object pronoun still comes first. You do NOT have to attach to an infinitive, you can still place both in front of the conjugated verb. Te la voy a traer más tarde. I am going to bring it to you later. or after the infinitive Voy a traértela más tarde. I am going to bring it to you later.

Accentuation Written accents must be added to the verb, to keep the original pronunciation or stress on the verb. The accent mark must be placed 3 vowels from the right. Voy a traértela más tarde.

Attaching Pronouns to a Present Progressive Verb (-ando or -iendo) When using the present progressive with double pronouns, both pronouns must remain next to each other, that is, both pronouns must come either in front of the conjugated verb Te la estoy trayendo ahora mismo. I am bringing it to you right now or after the present progressive Estoy trayéndotela ahora mismo. I am bringing it to you right now

Accentuation with Present Progressive Written accents must be added to the verb, to keep the original pronunciation or stress on the verb. The accent mark must be placed 4 vowels from the right. Estoy trayéndotela ahora mismo.
