Double Bind By: Lundon Hatcher
Ending up in AA Voluntary n Through and Intervention n Ultimatums n Court Ordered n n Three out of four of these are Double Binds!
All you need to do… To get into AA all you need to do is have a desire to quit drinking, have an open mind, and try n You will gain new freedom, new happiness, be selflessness, have a greater self esteem and wealth n
But wait… n “Are you going to give in and accept where you are now? Or are you going to work the program and achieve these 12 step promises? ” n Answering yes to either of these is a double bind. If you accept your state of addiction you will stay in that state, if you agree to the second part than a desire to quit drinking is not all you need
Gregory Bateson n “You must be free, you must make your own choices” But being free isn’t really being free. -And in AA you don’t really have choices so how you gain a new since of freedom; knowing that you just followed the steps and did what you were told
Stay or Leave n n n If you leave AA you never will know if you gave it your all, your family and peers will be upset and you could be “cut off” from all you know (ultimatum) But if you stay your lying to yourself and you will disrupt the peace with your family and peers Gregory- “I am lying- than your telling the truth”
In Conclusion Ways in which you enter AA are usually Double Binds n Once in AA what is asked of you is often a Double Bind n The debate on leaving or staying is a Double bind n So for the most part AA is a Double Bind n
