DORIAN GRAY’S MORAL DEGRADATION By: Christabelle Intong
Chapter One: • “Then I feel, Harry, that I have given away my whole soul to some one who treats it as it it were a flower to put in his coat, a bit of decoration to charm his vanity, an ornament for a summer’s day. Context: This was from the painter. He talks about Dorian Gray and how he is very innocent, young, and gentle.
Chapter Two: • “There was something in his face that made one trust him at once. All the candour of youth was there as well as all youth’s passionate purity. ” Context: In chapter two, Lord Henry looks at Dorian Gray while he is being painted. This quote talks about the appearance of Dorian is young and innocent and he seems like a person you can trust based on his looks.
Chapter Three: • “I would sooner come with you; yes, I feel I must come with you. Do let ne. And you will promise to talk to me all the time? No one talks so wonderfully as you do. ” Context: Lord Henry is asked by Dorian if he can join him. Dorian is fascinated by Lord Henry and this is when we see a change in influence.
Chapter Four: “Why should I not love her? Harry, I do love her. She is everything to me in my life. ” Context: Chapter 4, Dorian Gray is talking to Harry about how he met Sibyl Vane. He is young and in love and new to his feelings towards Sibyl.
Chapter Five: • “Why does he love you so much? I know why I lpve him. I love him because he is like what Love himself should be. But what does he see in me? I am not worthy of him. ” Context: Sybil Vane questions his how she is loved by someone in a higher social class.
Chapter Six: • “ Don’t Harry. You have annoyed Dorian. He is not like other men. He would never bring misery upon any one. His nature is too fine for that. ” Context: In Chapter 6, people talk about Dorian Gray getting married. Dorian Gray is marrying someone beneath his social status. Dorian Gray is not the type of person to hurt someone.
Chapter Seven: • “You have killed my love. You used to stir my imagination. Now you don’t even stir my curiosity. You simply produce no effect. I loved you because you were marvelous, because you had genius, intellect, because you realized the dreams of great poets and gave shape and substance to the shadows of art. ” Context: Dorian Gray turns cold and heartless after seeing Sybil Vane perform on stage. He does not feel anything towards her anymore after he find out that there is something wrong with her.
Chapter Eight: • “ So I have murdered Sybil Vane, ’ said Dorian Gray, half to himself ‘murdered her as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife. ” Context: Dorian Gray just learned about the death of Sybil Vane. This is when he start thinking many thoughts on how he might have been the reason she is dead. Dorian really feels a sense of trauma and this is when he starts to change.
Chapter Nine: • “What has the actual lapse of time got to do with it? It is only shallow people who require years to get rid of an emotion. A man who is matter of himself can end a sorrow as easily as he can invent pleasure I don’t want to be at a mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them. ” Context: Dorian Gray says this in response to Basil asking Dorian why he went to the Opera while Sybil Vane was at her own funeral. Dorian Gray is changing into a cold and heartless person.
Chapter Ten: • “It would not interest you, Mr. Hubbard, ’ he said, keeping his eye on the man. He felt ready to leap upon him and fling him to the ground if he dared to lift the gorgeous hanging that concealed the secret of his life. ” Context: Dorian Gray is hiding something to people. In the beginning he was a man of youth and excitement. Now he is keeping secrets and is somewhat cold.
Final Analysis: • Overall in the very beginning we start out with Dorian Gray being a young innocent man. Throughout the chapters he meets many people and is influence by them. • Dorian Gray is very youthful and kind. He starts out as a curious young man and very full of love and happiness. • “A man who is matter of himself can end a sorrow as easily as he can invent pleasure I don’t want to be at a mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them. ” This quote from Chapter Nine, shows that Dorian Gray was affect by the death of Sybil Vane. • In chapter ten he seems to be more cunning and somewhat violent. He wanted to launch himself at Mr. Hubbard.
