Course Description and Grading Policy • The purpose of this course is to provide a general introduction to Psychology. Over the course of the semester, we will discover how the brain, the body, and the environment, all contribute to the emergence of the broad spectrum that is human behavior. We will focus on a history of the field of psychology, psychological research methods, and introduce ourselves to historical and modern theories and areas of study. In addition, we will survey psychological disorders, the development of the brain/body/environment system, and the biological basis of behavior by way of an introduction to neuroscience. • Grade will be an average of the following: • 10% Participation • 20% Projects & Essays • 15% Classwork & Home learning • 25% Quizzes • 30% Exams • Student’s grades are accessible on the student’s portal at all times. • Topics within this course include discussions of human sexuality, psychoactive drugs, graphic depictions of neurological structures, and other areas that some may find controversial or unsettling. It is the professor’s duty to provide scientifically accurate information and frame all content within the context of psychological research. By signing the syllabus, the guardian indicates that they understand the topics to be discussed and gives the student permission for the following: • View a video of a cadaver dissection of the brain and spinal cord • View videos of actual neurosurgery • Participate in an in-class dissection of a preserved sheep’s brain • Participate in an in-class dissection of a preserved bovine eye • If the student cannot participate in any of the activities (i. e. dissections) due to religious reasons a note must be provided a week in advance of the activity and an alternative assignment will be given. I will also randomly call on a student. He/she will UNMUTE their audio and answer my question(s). 11. Assignments/assessments will be posted via Google Classroom 12. Late assignments/make-up tests will ONLY be accepted if the tardy/absence is excused and will take place during my office hours 13. No eating or drinking during virtual class 14. Cellphones or any other electronic device that is not your primary Zoom device are NOT ALLOWED (Unless instructed by the teacher for class purposes) 15. Do not leave the Zoom meeting to navigate any non-instructional website 16. Maintain virtual etiquette. 17.
