Research Notes- Part I Places: • Source 1 (encyclopedia) • Argamasilla del Alba: In part one (52) there are six poems supposedly written by members of a (nonexistent) Literary Academy in this small town and supposedly it is none other than the home of Don Quixote himself this is also (a place where Cervantes was once held captive in Medrano cave and supposedly started writing the story)3 • Campo de Montiel: the ancient and famous region (or county) where Don Quixote went on his first sally, it is not recognized by the government of Spain part 1 (2)
Research Notes- Part I • Source 3 (http: //www. castillalamancha. es) • Campo de Criptana near Mota del Cuervo the site where most believed Don Quixote had his battle with the windmills part 1 (8) • El Puerto Lapice the area where Don Quixote drives off two evil figures (benedictine friars) and a Basque squire who he thinks have abducted a princess part one (9) • Alcana Jewish quarter in Toledo where author buys manuscript of Don Quixote part one (9) • Sierra Morena: the mountain range where Don Quixote spent some time doing things like doing penance part one (25) • Inn of Juan Palomeque part one (45)
Research Notes- Part II • Source 2 (online text) • El Toboso: the home of Don Quixote’s fair lady Dulcinea del Toboso part two (9) • THE CAVE OF MONTESINOS (a cave that Don Quixote was lowered into and experienced great visions in his sleep) and lakes of Ruidera (which were rumored to be women who were turned into lakes by Merlin) were places of great fame in Don Quixote’s time (located near Ossa de Montiel 3. He thought he must see them and know if their stories were true. Part two (22) • The Ebro River where Don Quixote and Sancho find a boat that Quixote believes was left for them to go save another knight. They do not get far in the boat before their lives are endangered and they have to be saved by some millers part two (29) • Region of Aragon: in this region, Don Quixote and Sancho stay with a Duke and Duchess who are familiar with part one of their adventures for several chapters. The Duke and Duchess play several tricks on the mad travelers for their amusement including giving Sancho an island to govern
Research Notes- Part II • Source 4 (lexicon) • The Isle of Barataria is the name of the “island” given to Sancho to govern while he stays at the palace of the sadistic duke and duchess in part two (45 -53). Although this is not a real place, some scholars believe that it is actually the villa of Alcala de Ebro which is encircled almost entirely by the river and would have been owned by the duke 4 • Zaragoza ( or Saragossa) is where Don Quixote was headed when left the castle of the duke and duchess part two (57), but after learning that the fake Don Quixote went there in the false sequel, the real one decides to go to Barcelona instead • Barcelona spends several chapters here where he is defeated by The Knight of the White Moon (Sanson Carrasco) in battle in (after which he agreed to go home for a year which turns out to be the end of his travels however the pair is captured and taken back to the castle of the Duke and Duchess for one last prank) part two (66) 1, “talks” to a golden head with all the answers, and goes to a ball where he dances until he can not dance anymore (62)2
