Domenico Robusti, também conhecido como Domenico Tintoretto, nasceu em Veneza, Itália, em 1560. Domenico cresceu sob a tutela de seu pai, o renomado pintor Jacopo Tintoretto. Biography: Domenico Robusti, also known as Domenico Tintoretto, was born in Venice, Italy, in 1560. Domenico grew up under the tutelage of his father, the renowned painter Jacopo Tintoretto. Domenico became a member of the Venetian painter's guild when he was 17 years old, and, to continue his artistic formation, he worked alongside his father, performing paintings in the Doge’s Palace in Venice. Afterwards, Domenico began to work in an independent way in the Palace, focusing his work on historic themes, including complex arrangements in various figures in battle scenes. Troughout his life Domenico also painted a lot of religious scenes and portraits. Some of his celebrated altarpieces include “St. George Killing the Dragon” for the “San Giorgio Maggiore”, “Translation of the Body of St. Mark to Venice” for the “Scuola of San Marco”, “Apparition of St. Mark” for the “Ducal Church”, and altarpieces in Modena and Rimini. In 1592 he went to Ferrara to paint a portrait of Margaret of Austria, afterwards Queen of Spain, and, in 1595, he went from Venice to Mantua at the invitation of Vicenzo I Gonzaga. When Jacopo died in 1594, Domenico took over the Tintoretto's studio, with the help of his youngest brother Marco, and his assistent Bastian Casser. Domenico’s early work continued the artist vision of his father, until his own artistic personality emerged at last, given focus to the landscapes within a composition and the background details. At age 74 Domenico was stricken with apoplexy and lost the use of his right hand. Although he tried to paint with the left hand, he was not successful in doing it. Domenico died in Venice, on May 17, 1635. His work is displayed in several museums around the world, as “Hermitage Museum”, Saint Petersburg, “Museum of Fine Arts”, Houston, “National Galleries of Scotland”, Edinburgh, “Courtauld Institute of Art”, London, “Biblioteca Ambrosiana”, Milan; among others.
