The fact that the first-born is the only child for a while makes him/her get all of the parents’ attention. The oldest often learns self-confidence and independence. As younger children arrive, the oldest child may be pushed into responsibilities for their siblings and household chores. Qualities often associated with oldest children are: reliable, likes to be in control, well organized, critical, good student, cautious. Middle children are youngest till another child arrives. They are the oldest after their elder sibling(s) leaves home. Middle children often feel excluded in families since younger siblings are getting more attention and older siblings are getting privileges and responsibilities. They are often friendly and flexible. Other quality traits common to middle children are: good mediator, secretive, socially skilled, often follows others, avoids conflict.
Youngest children have many “parents. ” They often are cared for by all of the other family members. They have decisions made for them—which makes them more dependent on others. They have many teachers as well, though, and may be skillful before their siblings were at their age. Other traits of youngest children are: charming, outgoing, manipulative, blames others, perceptive with people. Only children have no one else competing for their parents’ attention. They are encouraged to succeed and develop selfconfidence. They usually get along well with adults, but may not have social skills for peer relationships unless given opportunities to spend time with peers. Other qualities of only children are: critical, lonely, super-reliable, perfectionist, follows directions, conscientious. What shapes personality development? A. Personality: the total of behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values that are characteristic of an individual. 1. Determines how we adjust to our environment. 2. Determines how we react in certain situations. 3. No two individuals are the same. B. Nature vs. Nurture (inherited characteristics vs. environmental/ social learning) Nature: 1. Heredity: the transmission of genetic characteristics from parents to children. 2. Instinct: unchanging, biologically inherited pattern. 3. Social environment and learning. Most Social scientists believe that environmental or nurture has the greatest influence. (Pavlov & dogs salivate).
Most Social scientists believe that environmental or nurture has the greatest influence. Do you agree?
C. Four main factors which determine Personality: 1. Heredity: What you are born with can also include certain aptitudes: a capacity to learn a particular skill like art or music. 2. Birth Order: Our personalities are also influenced by whether we have brothers, sisters, both, or neither. Birth order can affect views of the world.
C. Four main factors which determine Personality: 3. Parental Characteristics: for example; age of parents can have an affect on children’s development. Also; level of education, religious orientation, economic status, cultural heritage, and occupation. 4. Cultural Environment: determines basic types of personalities that will be found in a society. Each culture has model personality types; I. e. U. S. = competitiveness, assertiveness, and individualism
II. Isolation in Childhood: A. Feral Children: Wild or untamed children. 1. Found living with animals or isolated in their homes from social contact. 2. Children had few human characteristics other than appearance. 3. They had acquired no reasoning ability, no manners, and no ability to control their bodily functions. Anna: raised by dogs Genie: confined to room from 20 months to 13 years old. As sociologists, what does this tell us? 4. Sociological studies point strongly to the conclusion that our personality comes from our cultural environment.
B. Institutionalization: children raised in orphanages and hospitals. 1. Study done surveying these children; received food and proper medical care but little human contact. 2. Within two years of birth; about a third of the children died. 3. Of the survivors; fewer than 25% could walk by themselves dress themselves, or use a spoon. Only one child could speak. As sociologists, what does this tell us?
