Document: WT-04 -02 TYRE INDUSTRY WORK PLAN PROPOSAL IWG WGWT October 18 th
AGENDA ü Aims of the Tests campaign ü Principles ü How to move forward
AIMS OF THE TESTS CAMPAIGN ü Assumptions : ANALITICAL TEST PLAN (limited number of tests sites (1 or 2) • • Worn Tyre preparation based on Tyre Industry proposed method Wet grip method based on improved method for new tyres Both Trailer and Vehicle test method to be assessed Both new and worn SRTT need to be tetsted (both are candidates as a future reference tyre) ü Some technical issues, specific to the worn tyre testing, need an assessment • Roughness: To confirm whether roughness has an impact or not on the Wet grip index performance and propose a maximum value • Worn profile: to check the influence of the worn profile variation by the current buffing method on the Wet Grip index dispersion • Natural versus buffed worn tyre: to validate the assumption that ageing can be neglected in the preparation method (Normal and 3 PMSF tyres). • New worn SRTT + waterdepth: 1. to check the dispersion linked to the tolerance of both buffing method (tread depth) and waterdepth range. 2. To check the worn SRTT brings in terms of dispersion • Tyres peculiarities: to study the behavior of the following peculiar tyres: legal race, All Terrain tyres, Ice tyres and to assess whether specific thresholds have to be considered.
GLOBAL SCREENING (involving all tests sites) AIMS OF THE TESTS CAMPAIGN ü Does the proposed method work for the worn tyre testing? Is the tests campaign representing the current market ? • Relevance of the test parameter ranges of the « new » method for the worn tyre method • Relevance of the WGI formulas/coefficients of the « new » method for the worn tyre • Test dispersion evaluation • Characterization of the worn tyre market performance • Decision on the threshold(s)

CANDIDATE TIRES Screening • This objective implies to test a large range of tyres : • Normal: 40 candidates (trailer) and 20 candidates (vehicle) 4 grades (A: 5 tyres, B: 13 tyres, C: 18 tyres, E: 4 tyres), 6 tyre sizes (subdividing of sizes in terms of wet grip performance ), Premium (x%) , Medium (y%) , Budget (z%) from Lizeo database. • M+S: 7 candidates (trailer) and 3 candidates (vehicle) • 3 PMSF: 16 candidates (trailer) and 8 candidates (vehicle) Classe % A >= 155 9% B 140 - 154 29% C 125 - 139 49% D E 110 - 124 13% F <= 109 0%
NUMBER OF SITES • Number of participants to be confirmed: • EU Manufacturers : MI, BS, CO, GY, PI, NOK, … • Test centers : IDIADA, TUV, UTAC, … • Asia : JATMA, CATARC, …. èThis diversity would ensure a representative screening of test conditions èDeadline for participation confirmation by End November • NB : each participant to confirm the feasibility of trailer and/or vehicle test. Example : 8 potential sites for trailer , 6 for vehicle
ORGANIZATION / LOGISTICS • TYRES • MI provides SRTTs (depends on the number ) • Each internal candidate tyre is provided to all participants by each manufacturer • Other candidates tyres have to be bought • TYRE PREPARATION (BUFFING) • Each participant is responsible for preparation • Necessity to reach representativity of various preparation protocols • Additional Buffing capacities if needed • TO BE ADRESSED LATER : SHARING OF RESULTS • Dataset format and storage …
