Doctrine & Covenants 27 “When Ye Partake of the Sacrament” Doctrine & Covenants 27: 2 “Elder Ezra Taft Benson and Frederick W. Babbel were meeting with Church members in Saarbrucken, Germany – then in the French Zone of occupation. The saints had tried for weeks to secure a slice or two of bread in order that they might partake of the sacrament. They had to pay the equivalent of $100 a bushel for such peelings – without the potatoes. Doctrine & Covenants 27: 12 This text confirms the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood, for which we have no date or official account. Erastus Snow, who served as an apostle for nearly forty years; gives the following account of the restoration of the higher priesthood: “In due course of time, as we read in the history which he (Joseph Smith) has left, Peter, James and John appeared to him. It was a period when they were being pursued by their enemies and they had to travel all night, and in the dawn of the coming day when they were weary and worn who should appear to them but Peter, James and John, for the purpose of conferring upon them the Apostleship, the keys of which they themselves had held while upon the earth, which had been bestowed upon them by the Savior (Journal of Discourses, 23: 183).

The Addison Everett Account Addison Everett was a faithful member of the church. He said he heard Joseph talking to Hyrum Smith just before they went to Carthage. They were talking about the time they were arrested in 1829 after they had come back down into the Colesville/ Harmony area. Their lawyer John Reid said that they had no chance in the court room and that they had better escape and flee for their lives. So they did, running most of the evening to get away. The prophet had to carry Oliver much of the way because of his bad health.

At daylight, both men were exhausted and sitting on a log and Oliver said, “Joseph, how long do we have to endure such things? ” It was at this moment that Peter, James and John made their appearance and conferred the Melchizedek Priesthood and the Apostleship on both men. Joseph said Oliver had no trouble going the rest of the way. This is the only account of the restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood that the Church has.

We do not know the exact date that it was received. This restoration most probably occurred between the 16 th-28 th of May 1829 (Larry C. Porter, Priesthoods, ” Ensign, Dec. 1996, 33 -47).

It will be a day of judgment for the faithful of all the ages. And it will take place in Daviess County, Missouri, at a place called Adam-ondi. Adman (Bruce R. Mc. Conkie, Millennial Messiah, 578 -79). The sacrament is to be administered in a future day, on this earth, when the Lord Jesus is present, and when all the righteous of all ages are present. This, of course will be a part of the grand council at Adam-ondi -Ahman (Bruce R. Mc. Conkie, Millennial Messiah, 587). Moroni will be there also (Doctrine & Covenants 27: 5).

By putting on the “whole armor of God, ” we are able to protect four main parts of our bodies: 1. The girdle of truth: (chastity) 2. The breastplate of righteousness: Our heart being set on the things of God (our conduct) 3. The helmet of salvation: Protection of our head 4. Our feet: travel) (our thoughts) (the path we Shod with the preparation of the gospel. President Lee said that our feet represent our goals and objectives in life.

Remember: There is no protection from the backside! We need to face our problems and not run from them!

President Joseph Fielding Smith explained that “it was very necessary that Oliver Cowdery should receive this admonition, for he was inclined to take issue with the Prophet even in regard to matters of revelation. Much good came out of this unpleasant incident, for the members were taught that there was order in the Church and only one appointed to receive commandments and revelations for their guidance, and he was the one God had called. The members at that time were largely excusable for falling into this error, because they had but recently come into the Church and had to be taught in all things pertaining to the kingdom of God and its government. They did not know that it was wrong for a man other than the Prophet to claim to be the spokesman for the Almighty, and this revelation taught them that confusion would result from such a course, and that Joseph Smith held the keys of revelation until another was appointed to succeed him” (Church History and Modern Revelation, 1: 135 -36).

Doctrine & Covenants 28: 8 -16 Oliver Cowdery called on a Mission to the Lamanites “The Lamanite mission was a very important movement of the young but vigorous Church. Oliver Cowdery was the firstappointed member of the party. Peter Whitmer, Jr. , was added by revelation and then Parley P. Pratt and Ziba Peterson. Soon after the Conference the little party set out on the perilous journey of 1, 500 miles. They started on foot, trusting in the Lord to open the way. Near Buffalo they visited the Catteraugus Indians and left the Book of Mormon with them. Then the proceeded to Kirtland, Ohio. Here they visited Sidney Rigdon, a popular Campbellite minister. He and some of his friends joined the Church. Night and day, for some time, the missionaries were teaching the people in Kirtland vicinity. After having ordained Rigdon, Isaac Morley, John Murdock, Lyman Wight and others, to the ministry, the missionaries left for the west. Near Sandusky they visited the Wyandot tribe and preached the gospel.

Hiram Page Studied medicine and traveled extensively through Vermont, New York and Canada. He was the brother-in-law to the Whitmer's and one of the Eight Witnesses. Before the conference of 26 September 1830, Hiram found a stone three by five inches in length and one-half inch thick with two holes. He believed the stone possessed qualities that enabled him to be a “revelator. ” He claimed to receive revelations through the stone identifying the chosen location of the “American New Jerusalem” and the proper governing process of the Church.

Hiram Page (1848) To say my mind was so treacherous that I had forgotten what I saw. To say that a man of Joseph’s ability, who at that time did not know how to pronounce the word Nephi, could write a book of six hundred pages, as correct as the Book of Mormon, without supernatural power…. [I] would be treating the God of heaven with contempt, to deny these testimonies (Hiram Page to William Mc. Lellin, May 30, 1847, printed in the Ensign of Liberty of the Church of Christ (Kirtland, Ohio) 1 (January 1848): 63. The letter was written from Ray County, Missouri).

The stone was handed down in the Whitmer family from one generation to another and is currently held by the Community of Christ. Hiram and his family were severely persecuted while living close to Independence. General Moses Wilson detailed the atrocities: I went in company with forty others, to the house of Hiram Page, a Mormon, in Jackson County. We got logs and broke in every door and window at the same instant; and pointing our rifles at the family, we told them, we would be d___d if we didn’t shoot every one of them, if Page didn’t come out.

At that, a tall woman made her appearance, with a child in her arms. I told the boys she was too d__n tall. In a moment the boys stripped her, and found it was Page. I told them to give him a d__n good one. We gave him sixty or seventy blows with hickory withes which we had prepared. His injuries were so sever that his family members feared for his life. In Far West, Hiram lost faith in the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith and was excommunicated. He never denounced his testimony of the Book of Mormon to which he was a witness of the plates.

Hiram Page, as recorded by William Mc. Lellin (1871) One circumstance I’ll relate of one of these eight witnesses. While the mob was raging in Jackson County Missouri in 1833 some young men ran down Hiram Page in the woods and commenced pounding him with whips and clubs. He begged, but there was no mercy. They said he was a damned Mormon, and they meant to beat him to death! Finally one then said to him, if you deny that damned book, we will let you go. Hiram said how can I deny what I know to be true? Then they pounded him again. When they thought he was about to breathe his last, they said to him, Now what do you think of your God, when he don’t save you? Well said he, I believe in God--Well, said one of the most intelligent among them, I believe the damned fool will stick to it though we kill him. Le us let him go. But his life was nearly run out. He was confined to his bed for a length of time. So much for a man who knows for himself. Knowledge is beyond faith or doubt. It is positive certainty (Schaefer, William E. Mc. Lellin’s Lost

Elder Harman Rector, Jr. had an experience while serving as a mission president that illustrated how people can be deceived if they are not careful and do not understand the principles of receiving revelation for the Church: “A man came forward and said that he was receiving revelation from the Lord, ‘Oh, ’ I said, ‘what kind of revelation are you receiving? ’ He said he got it in a code, and he had found the key to the code on a piece of paper under a rock. He sat in his living room and these numbers came to him. He wrote them down; and then he went to his key and translated and thought. This is the way he received revelation from the Lord…

“… In the ‘revelations’ he had received, three things came out that he was going to do. First, he was going to lead the lost Ten Tribes out of the north country. Second, he was going to bring forth the sealed portion of the Book of Mormon. Third, he was going to be one of the two prophets to withstand the forces of Gog and Magog in Jerusalem in the last days. I said, ‘You are really going to be busy!’

“Well, ’ he said, ‘if it’s not of the Lord, where does it come from? ” “Well – may I interview you? ” He said, ‘ Yes, I am willing. ’ I asked, ‘Are you morally clean? ’ He said, ‘Yes. ” I said, ‘I mean, have you ever had relations with a woman other than your wife since you joined this Church? ’ He said, ‘Oh, yes. ” “When was the last time? ” “Well, it was two months ago. ” “Do you pay tithing? ” “No”. We didn’t have to go much beyond that. I said, ‘you may rest assured this is not of the Lord. The Lord does not operate from this kind of polluted stream.

“It is important that we be in condition if we are going to get revelation from the Lord. You may rest assured that if you are not in condition you will not get it. However, if you are not worthy but you fast and pray and work at it, you’ll get communication, because Old Scratch (the devil) is great at giving it, and he loves to give it. He gives it all the time, but it’s important that we know from whence it came” (“How to Know if Revelation Is From the Lord, ” in speeches of the Year, 1976, (Provo, BYU Press), 1977, 14 -15. )
