Research focus – Political science • Application and utilization of theoretical concepts of democracy and non-democratic forms of government in the historical perspective and in the present • Transformation of the political systems with focus on the development trends related to modernization and democratization, comparative analysis with the focus on the national and regional identity, analysis of particular elements of political systems • Political geography • Analysis of aspects of political thought (with the focus on the 19 th and 20 th century) 6

Financing studies and research – full-time students • Doctoral scholarship • 1 st year – 6300 CZK (academic year 2016/2017) • 2 nd- 4 th year – 7600 CZK • After state doctoral exam (usually 3 rd year) + 2000 CZK • Specific academic research (SAR/SVV) • Average reward ca 17 500 CZK, maximum reward ca 57 000 CZK • Note: Doctoral scholarship may be reduced (up to 50%) for failure to fulfill the study duties. • Administrative tasks: • Taking minutes at the State Exams – 150 CZK per hour • Participation in the Graduation Ceremonies – 400 CZK per hour • Help during the admission procedure – 1000 CZK/day • Ad hoc tasks – 150 CZK per hour 9

Application procedure • Admission to the doctoral studies is held once a year in June • Accepted students enroll in the study in September of the following academic year • Applicants must meet following criteria: • Master's degree graduate in the Social Sciences or Humanities • Orientation in the field of study to the extent of the requirements for a Master's in Political science/IR/Security Studies Proficiency in the English language • • Until 30 th April 2017, applicants must submit to the Study Office: • Application form (electronic version via SIS or fill out the SEVT form) • CV • Until 1 st June 2017, applicants are required to submit their dissertation proposal: • electronic form to cds-ips@fsv. cuni. cz (PS, IR) as well to phd. mv@seznam. cz (only IR) • hard-copy to the CDS at the IPS • Form of the study (internal/external) can be changed during the application procedure. • Study programme (PS/IR) cannot be changed during or after the application procedure. 15

Political Science: admission criteria • Admission procedure consist of an interview with the admission board. • The interview is based on: • Dissertation proposal • Discussion on the submitted list of the academic literature relevant to the proposed research focus • Admission criteria are as follows: • Quality of the dissertation proposal (with emphasis on theoretical and methodological framework) • Orientation in the field of study based on the submitted list of academic literature • Bonus for the previous publishing activities 16

IR: admission criteria • The admission procedure runs in two rounds: • 1 st round: • Admission board evaluates the research proposal on the basis of its academic value and its compatibility with the priority topics offered by the Department and sets the required threshold in points for the advance to the second round. • 2 nd round: • Applicants who pass the threshold are invited for an interview. • The interview assess objectives of the research project, theoretical and methodological framework of the proposed project and feasibility of the research plan and its limits. • An applicant can obtain up to 40 points in each round. In the second round 10 points are reserved for eventual bonus for publications 17 (articles, essays) related to the topic of the dissertation project.

Basic Study Rules • Doctoral students conduct their research and fulfill obligatory duties in the cooperation with their supervisor and according to their individual study plan (ISP) • To pass doctoral studies students need to: • Fulfill all commitments in the ISP • Pass the state doctoral exam (SDE) • Defend the dissertation thesis • Other obligations: • Specific Academic Research (SAR/SVV) • Apply for the grant (e. g. Supervisor • Supervisor is usually a Professor, Associate Professor or a holder of the Dr. Sc. or DSc. academic degree. The supervisor can exceptionally be a member of the academic staff with the Ph. Charles University Grant Agency (GAUK) • Grant competition for students of doctoral and master's programs • Allows to fund genuine research from 1 to 3 -year projects. • Up to 300 000 CZK per project/year – finances are used for the scholarship of the main researcher and supervisor, funding of the research trips, conferences, purchase of the literature etc. • Submissions of the new projects are opened every October/ November, the results are usually available on March each year • Before the project submission is opened students are offered participation in the „grant application training" organized by the 27 IPS or faculty.
