COLUMBIAN EXCHANGE… GOOD OR BAD? Positive Impacts Negative Impacts Ø New foods were introduced that helped people live longer. Ø European diseases wiped out much of the Native American population in the New World. Ø New animals were introduced that made life easier for the people. Ø Many of the Native Americans were enslaved and lost their land to the Europeans.
Who benefited more from the Columbian Exchange in the first one hundred years, the Old World or the New World?
• The Old World benefited more because they got most of the land in the New World along with new resources. Gold and silver mines in the New World were so productive they altered European economies forever • The population in the Old World also increased because of the new crops that came from the New World. (corn and potatoes) • In the New World, the indigenous people had their land taken away and many were enslaved. Their population greatly decreased.
Missionary Efforts during the Age of Exploration • Christianity has a long tradition of spreading their beliefs through missions • New land + new people = new opportunities for conversion • Missionary efforts were met with resistance in many places • Spread disease incidentally and destroyed native cultures • We must view this through our historical lens, most missionaries thought they were doing a great thing for people
