BALAMORY
WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND BALAMORY? Balamory is a Scottish live action television series on British television (BBC One, BBC Two and CBeebies) for pre-school children, about a fictional small island community called Balamory in Scotland. Balamory was filmed mostly in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, with the some of the scenes at Archie's castle filmed at Fenton Tower in North Berwick and the park and nursery scenes filmed in Glasgow. It was produced between 10 February 2002 and 14 April 2005 by BBC Scotland, with 254 episodes made (including a DVD-exclusive Christmas episode). The series was created by Brian Jameson.
CHARACTERS AND THEIR HOUSES BASICS There were 8 different characters, each of which had a different colour house. Each person and their house had a song too! These characters are: • Miss Hoolie • Archie • Josie Jump • Edie Mc. Credie • PC Plum • Spencer • Suzie Sweet • Penny Pocket
MISS HOOLIE Miss Hoolie is the village school teacher in the television series and is played by Julie Wilson Nimmo. At the start of each episode she sings a song called “The Nursery Song” or otherwise known as “Everybody, Everyone” (see video on the right). Miss Hoolie loves working with children and if there is a problem to be solved 80% of the time, people go to her. Miss Hoolie lives in a mint green house but spends most of her time in the classroom teaching the children.
PC PLUM PC Plum is the village Police Officer in the television series and is played by Andrew Agnew. During each episode he is in he sings a song about who he is and what he does for the village (As shown on the right). PC Plum loves nature and riding his bike and usually he gets too engrossed in nature and rarely solves the village crimes. PC Plum lives in a White house but spends some of his time in the village Police Station
SPENCER Spencer is the village painter in the television series and is played by Rodd Christensen. In each episode he is in he sings a song about painting and the things he loves doing around Balamory (see video on the right). Spencer loves painting and is really good friends with Archie and Josie Jump, if there is ever a creative problem; you can count on Spencer lives in an orange house but can usually be found anywhere in the village riding his painters cart.
Buki Akib JOSIE JUMP Josie Jump is the village fitness coach in the television series and is played by Buki Akib (series 1 -2) and Kasia Haddad (series 3 -4). In each episode she is in she sings a song about her fitness and what she does in Balamory (see video on the right). Josie Jump loves being sporty, dancing and helping people get fit, in most episodes Josie is seen with Edie and Miss Hoolie. Josie Jump lives in a four-story yellow house and is usually there most of the time. Kasia Haddad
EDIE MCCREDIE Edie Mc. Credie is the village bus/coach driver in the television series and is played by Juliet Cadzow. In each episode she is in she sings a song about her bus and how much she loves helping people in Balamory (see video on the right). Edie loves to help people and she loves driving in her bus. Edie is often seen with PC Plum and Miss Hoolie. Edie lives in a blue garage/house and is usually there most of the
ARCHIE Archie is the village Inventor in the television series and is played by Miles Jupp. In each episode he is in he sings about being an inventor and creating things out of scrap. (see video on the right) (this video isn’t his opening but it describes him well) Archie loves to be creative and enjoys making things out of different materials that he finds lying about, Archie is quite close to Miss Hoolie and Spencer. Archie lives in a Pink Castle and is usually there most of the time.
SUZIE SWEET AND PENNY POCKET Suzie Sweet and Penny Pocket are the village shop/café owners in the television series. Suzie Sweet is played by Mary Riggans. Penny Pocket is played by Kim Tserkezie. In each episode they are in, they sing a song about their café/shop and how they treat and welcome their customers (see video on the right). Suzie Sweet and Penny Pocket love to keep customers happy, they are quite often visited by most of the characters. Suzie and Penny live in their Red shop, Suzie and Penny usually stay in the shop but sometime Penny heads out.
MY FAVOURITE EPISODE ‘Rain Or Shine’ is a pair of episodes. My favourite out of the two is ‘Rain’ because it shows Archie’s creative flare and how he needs to get help from the other people that live in the village. In ‘Rain’ Archie finds a puddle which then gives him an idea to make a reflecting machine. The reason why this is my favourite episode is because Archie has such a clever mind and can create literally anything out of anything. ‘Rain’ (0: 00 – 18: 50) When I was little my 2 favourite Characters were Archie and Spencer because they are both really creative and they both inspired me. I enjoy art and anything creative really so I always looked up to these characters for inspiration on what I could do with my life.
For SOCIAL MEDIA FEEDBACK Many people in my Facebook ‘friend’s List’ used to watch Balamory and liked it. Here are some comments that people had on the television programme. “I loved the way it helps children to learn the weather and how it affects us. I also like where it id set in Scotland. ” “I actually visited the set in Tobermory as a kid which was one of my first memories so I have an emotional attachment to it. ” “There were lots of colours so it was engaging. ” Against Some people in my Facebook ‘friend’s List’ used to watch Balamory and didn’t like it. Here are some comments that people had on the television programme. “I never liked it because it wasn’t animated and as a child non-animated programmes used to bother me. I also hated the colour Yellow. ”
EVALUATION Overall I feel that Balamory is a good programme to watch because it teaches children colours and weather and about the job roles. The filming was clever because some of the houses were in different locations yet they manages to produce such a good programme. Balamory is a good programme for children ages 2 -5 because in this age zone children pick up all of their skills.
