Rules and Procedures What are they good for? • Maximizing safety • We want you to be safe. We also would like to be safe. • Maximizing success • Believe it or not, we want you to succeed! We will work very hard to give you the most enjoyable and fair learning environment possible, and to make sure that the more effort you put in the more you get out of this class.
The Rules Follow instructions given to you the first time, and every time. • This prevents time wasting. There is a lot to cover this year; choosing to not follow instructions sabotages your classmates’ (and your own) learning experience, and in some circumstances can endanger them (and yourself). • We will always try to be as clear as possible when giving instructions, but if you are confused please don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.
Keep Yourself to Yourself Keep your hands, feet, and belongings to yourself. • This is both for safety reasons and for the courtesy of your classmates and teachers.
Hands Up Raise your hand wait for permission to speak. • This is about mutually respect between you, your classmates, and the teachers. • Waiting for permission to speak ensures that everyone has the chance to be heard. • Unless specifically requested by a teacher, “choral” style calling out will not be accepted. • I will not compete with you for the attention of the class.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T Respect your school, your classroom, yourself, and others. • This is an all encompassing rule – treat your school, your classroom, yourself, your classmates, and your teachers with respect.
Use Your Words Speak politely, no offensive language or put-downs. • Any hateful comments on race, gender, sexuality, political views, appearance, religion, or any other type of perceived characteristic will not be tolerated – this applies to serious as well as “joking” comments. • The use of “shut up” is impolite and inappropriate and has no place in this classroom. • Rule of tongue: if you aren’t sure if something is offensive or not, assume it is.
Do Not Pass GO. Do Not Collect $200. The following severe disruptions will result in being sent to the office immediately: Fighting Damaging school property (including property of the teacher or other students) Threatening either of the above Or others at the teacher’s discretion
What Choice do You Have? Choosing NOT to follow the classroom rules will result in… • First offense: Warning and documentation • Second offense: Lunch detention • Third offense: Disciplinary referral Note: Contacting of parents/guardians will be done at the teachers’ discretion and may be done for good or bad behaviors.
I’m Working On It Choosing to work hard and follow the classroom rules will result in… • • The satisfaction of a job well done! A stress-free learning environment Acknowledgment of your work Weight added to your Core Reward Scale!
Procedures
Entering the Classroom Please enter quietly and sit in your assigned seat Take out the materials you need Check the agenda board, write down the homework, and get started on the Do Now activity
The Universe was Early (you are late) Enter quietly, drop off your pass with a teacher, take a seat, and begin working If you do not have a pass, it is an unexcused late arrival * More than 5 minutes late is considered a cut Three unexcused late arrivals results in parental contact and a lunch detention
Attention Please If one of the teachers says, “Alright stop!” you will respond https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=rog 8 ou-Zep. E After responding you should be quietly facing me and be ready to listen to me.
Handing in Homework will be checked or turned in at the beginning of class. Papers will be passed to the left of the room, then from the back of the room up toward the front. A teacher will collect the papers from the front corner and place them in the period’s folder on Mr. Lerner’s desk.
My Dog Ate It (you don’t have your homework) You must hand in a Student Responsibility Report This does not count for a grade, you must still hand in your homework the next day Homework will be accepted a day late for half credit After a day, late homework will not be accepted
Absence makes the work grow longer If you are absent on the day that an assignment is due, you must hand in the work the day you return to school to receive full credit. If you are absent on the day that work is assigned, you are responsible for finding out what you missed, getting the work, and handing it in on the time agreed upon with me.
Leaving the Classroom If you need to use the bathroom, hold up 3 fingers • One boy and one girl will be allowed out of the classroom at a time. • Sign the sign-out on your way out. If you need to go to the nurse, raise your hand let me know what is wrong Leaving the room for any reason requires you to sign out and take a pass • Passes are located next to the agenda board. • Goggles will let me know someone is out.
Everyday I’m Shuffling Stay in your seat unless you have permission to get up. If you need to sharpen your pencil, hold your pencil up to request permission to get up. If you need anything else, such as paper or a tissue, raise your hand to ask.
I Did All the Things There will usually be an extra activity available to work on if you finish work early. Often, this activity will give you an opportunity to start that night’s homework or will be worth some extra credit. You should also always have a book to read if you have time.
Participation Please participate! I want to hear what you have to say! Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion. If your question or comment is off topic, write it down and ask or tell me later. • Use the I’m Curious About box.
Dismissal The bell does not dismiss you, and you do not dismiss yourselves. I will dismiss you at the end of the period by saying “Have a nice day!”
Hand It Over When handing someone any object that is fragile, really expensive, or potentially dangerous you must do the following: If you are the giver do not let go of the object until the receiver says, “thank you”. If you are the receiver make sure you have a good hold on the object and then say, “thank you”.
OK Computer Handle computers with care • Be gentle with the computer. • Do not download or install any programs or applications without a teacher’s permission. • Do not visit any inappropriate websites. Put the computer back into the spot that matches its number and plug it back in. • I will be walking around the room and recording who has which computer. • Failing to do this will result in a lunch detention.
BYOD All BYOD devices must be approved • You may not have your device out without a teachers’ permission. • When permission is granted the device may only used for the purpose the permission was request. • Devices being used inappropriately or without permission will be confiscated.
