‘Guernica’ 1937 PABLO PICASSO
Cardboard interpretation of Guernica and your ’ title page for ‘War & Conflict Working on the shiny side of the cardboard, measure the following along the top of the cardboard strip. Measure 2 cms and mark with a biro pen Measure 15 cms and mark, another 15 cms and mark and another 15 cms and mark. Now mark the same measurements at the bottom edge of the card. Take a ruler and biro pen and join the marks, so you have a series of vertical lines. Press hard and then bend the card over your ruler to create a fold line. When you have completed this, flip your card over and begin to decorate your card using images and text. Use pencil to begin with and then oil pastel and paint resist techniques.
Picasso painted the huge painting entitled ‘Guernica’ as a response to the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica (April 26, 1937) the town was bombed by the Luftwaffe causing widespread destruction and civilian deaths, during the Spanish Civil War.
Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. . Picasso uses black, white, and grey paint to set a sombre mood and express pain and chaos
Guernica is 3. 5 metres (11 ft) tall and 7. 8 metres (25. 6 ft) wide, a muralsize canvas painted in oil. Flaming buildings and crumbling walls not only express the destruction of Guernica, but reflect the destructive power of civil war.
Picasso's purpose in painting it was to bring the world's attention to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by German bombers The newspaper print used in the painting reflects how Picasso learned of the massacre. The shape and posture of the bodies express protest.
The light bulb in the painting represents the sun. The broken sword near the bottom of the painting symbolizes the defeat of the people at the hand of their tormentors
