Trade in the United States ➢ January 18, 1803: POTUS Thomas Jefferson sends secret letter to Congress requesting finances for a transcontinental exploration. Requests: ➢ $2, 500 - “for the purpose of extending the external commerce of the United States”
The Expedition ➢ The Corps of Discovery led by Captain Lewis & 2 nd Lieut. Clark to explore the US lands obtained by the Louisiana Purchase & the Pacific Northwest. ➢ Began near St. Louis, Missouri in May 1804 ➢ Received assistance from many Natives along their journey. ➢ Sacagawea & Touissant Charbonneau acted as interpreters
Middle 1800’s ➢ Dirt roads had been built in parts of the nation. ➢ The use of river steamboats increased. ➢ Boats also traveled along manmade canals which strengthened local economies.
Canal An artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation.
