Indus Valley Civilization • On the Indian subcontinent – Subcontinent – a large landmass that is separated from the rest of the continent • Separated from Asia by the Himalaya and Hindu Kush Mountains
River Systems • Indus River forms a river system – River system – a main river that has other rivers and streams drain into it • Civilizations formed by 2 rivers – Indus River (NW) – Ganges River (NE) • Both needed rivers to flood to bring fertile soil
Climate • India had a dry climate • Farming depended on summer monsoons – Monsoon – seasonal wind • Winter: little rain fall • Summer: wet wind from the ocean brings rain – Also brings cool weather
Indus Valley Civilization • Although there was a large population, the Indus Valley Civilization disappeared around 1700 BC
