Ancient Egypt: Chapter 4 Section 2 Objectives and Essential Question • Students will: – Learn about Egypt’s social pyramid – Recall the Egyptian’s accomplishments in writing and architecture – Discuss how Egyptian religion and culture are depicted through writing and architecture Essential Question: What was the impact of the Egyptian religious belief system on daily life?
Egypt’s Social Pyramid • The Pharaoh controlled Egypt: the people saw him as a god – king • Nobles, Priests, and Officials helped govern Egypt • Scribes kept records • Merchants and Artisans made and sold goods or built temples • Farmers had 2 jobs: raise food and worked on building projects • They did this because of religious devotion • Slaves were at the bottom and forced to work
Ancient Writing • Ancient Egyptian developed one of the world’s first writing systems • Egyptians used hieroglyphics – a picture that represents a word or sound • Scribes and officials who knew how to write were valued WHY? • With writing, you can: – Share and preserve knowledge – Have a complex civilization – Have advanced technology There are over 800 different hieroglyphics!

Ancient Writing • Egyptians invented papyrus – material similar to paper • Papyrus was easy to transport and lasts a long time • Egyptian writings were also found on walls and coffins of mummies
Egyptian Architecture Egyptians built temples for their gods Egyptians built tombs for their pharaohs
Tombs and Pyramids • Tombs of early rulers were underground rooms • Inside were things the ruler might want in the afterlife – food, jewels, clothing , weapons • Imhotep – an architect who designed the first pyramid • Later architects smoothed out the sides and made the pyramids we know today
Tombs and Pyramids • At the time, the pyramids were the largest structures on Earth. WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT THE EGYPTIANS? • This shows that the Egyptians had advanced math and building skills • It took thousands of people to build the pyramids • Workers cut, moved, and placed the stone by hand • After 2200 B. C. pharaohs stopped building pyramids • They carved tombs and temples from cliffs near the Nile Valley
Painting and Sculptures • Paintings on the walls of tombs were painted to give the person buried all the objects shown on the wall • Egyptians were good at building sculptures – a statue made of stone, clay, or other materials • Large statues of gods would be in temples • Small statues would be placed in tombs • Statues could also replace a person’s body if it was destroyed
Science, Medicine, and Technology • Astronomy – the study of the stars and the sky • Seeing the star Sirius let the Egyptians know that flood season was coming • The Egyptians were great engineers What are 2 examples? – Pyramids and temples – Irrigation system • Anatomy - the study of the body • Egyptians were great surgeons • Egyptian doctors would study diseases and created medicines to treat or cure them

The Calendar and Mathematics • The Egyptians had two calendars – Solar calendar – 12 months and 365 days – Lunar calendar – based on moon cycles • The building of the pyramids shows that the Egyptians had a strong sense of arithmetic and geometry – Arithmetic – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division – Geometry – study of shapes
