Our goal: today we are going to learn how to divide fractions! This is important because: 1. Understanding fractions will help us earn an 80% or better on the NY State Math exam and Ms. Dass’ final exam! 2. Fractions have high utility value since they appear everywhere in real life!

How do I divide fractions? ! STEPS: 1. Keep the first fraction as it is 2. Change the division sign to a multiplication sign 3. Flip the numerator and denominator of the second fraction (the divisor) 4. Multiply! 5. Reduce and/or convert to a mixed number if necessary Or use K C F : Keep, Change, Flip

Let’s quickly review reciprocals. . . • What is does reciprocal (think of inverse) mean generally? • So, what is the reciprocal of 12? • Then what is the reciprocal of a fraction like 2/3? • We can’t properly divide fractions the way we would whole numbers so we use multiplication instead (which is the INVERSE) of division.
