Do Now Complete the Do Now on your Daily Organizer. Convert the following numbers to scientific notation. 1058000 . 003623 584. 24 ALSO, we will be having a quiz on FRIDAY covering significant figures, scientific notation, and the metric system. Do you feel prepared to be tested on that in 2 days? If not, tell me what you want me to review tomorrow.

How It Is Set Up General Form: A× 10 n A is a number greater than or equal to 1 AND less than 10. It N USUALLY has a decimal point after the first digit. is the “power of ten” or EXPONENT. It MUST be a whole number (NO DECIMALS) It can be positive OR negative. This will also tell you how many zeros were in your original number.
How to Convert to S. N. Step 1: Determine A Ignore all leading and trailing zeros and just look at your significant digits Place a decimal point so your number is between 1 and 10. Step 2: Determine n Start at the place you put a decimal point to determine A and count until you reach the decimal point in your original number For numbers without an original decimal, count to the end. Step 3: Put it all together
Practice Complete #1 -5 on your worksheet silently and independently and then I will ask from answers from you all in a couple minutes.
Backwards Challenge! Convert these numbers from scientific notation back to standard (or raw) notation: 1. 8. 54 x 105 2. 101 x 10 -8 3. 501 x 107 4. 5. 94 x 10 -3 5. 3. 86 x 102
Matrix Prefixes Scientific notation is an essential part of the metric system. We assign a "unit prefix" to represent specific powers of ten. Ex. The prefix “kilo” means 103 Ex. The prefix “micro” means 10 -6 The prefix creates a new unit which shrinks or expands the standard unit so it more appropriately matches with what is being measured. Ex. If I want to write 25, 000 meters, all I have to do is write 25 kilometers.

Mathematical Operations Like with significant figures, sometimes we will have to do mathematical operations with scientific notation. We will practice: Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction
Multiplication with S. N. MULTIPLY the numbers and ADD the exponents. Example: (7. 50 x 105) x (6. 1 x 103) MULTIPLY 7. 50 x 6. 1 ADD the exponents of 105 and 103 Don’t forget to round to the correct significant figures when you multiply 7. 50 x 6. 1
Multiplication with S. N. MULTIPLY the numbers and ADD the exponents. Example: (7. 50 x 105) x (6. 1 x 103) MULTIPLY 7. 50 x 6. 1 Don’t forget to round to the correct significant figures when you multiply 7. 50 x 6. 1 45. 75 46 ADD 5 the exponents of 105 and 103 + 3 = 8 108 8
Guided Practice Complete #1 independently and then when prompted, share your answer with a partner. After this, complete #2 independently and then we will group share.
Division with S. N. DIVIDE the numbers and SUBTRACT the exponents. Example: (7. 50 x 103) / (6. 1 x 105) DIVIDE 7. 50 / 6. 1 Don’t forget to round to the correct significant figures when you divide 7. 50 / 6. 1 SUBTRACT the exponents of 105 and 103
Division with S. N. DIVIDE the numbers and SUBTRACT the exponents. Example: (7. 50 x 103) / (6. 1 x 105) DIVIDE 7. 50 / 6. 1 Don’t forget to round to the correct significant figures when you divide 7. 50 / 6. 1 1. 2295 1. 2 SUBTRACT 3 the exponents of 103 and 105 – 5 = -2 10 -2 FINAL ANSWER = 1. 2 x 10 -2
Guided Practice Complete #3 independently and then when prompted, share your answer with a partner. After this, complete #4 independently and then we will group share.
Independent Practice Complete #5 -9 silently and independently. I will check this work and hand it back to you tomorrow.
Addition + Subtraction You must have the SAME EXPONENTS for both of the numbers you are trying to add or subtract

Exit Ticket Exit tickets will be my daily way of seeing whether or not you have understood the objectives we have gone over during class each day. They will NOT be graded for accuracy but WILL be graded for completion so make sure you always try each and every question. These exit tickets must be done silently and independently. If you violate this, you will lose your participation points for the day. You must wait to begin your exit ticket until Ms. Kemal says to begin.
Exit Ticket 1. Determine the number of significant figures: q q 2. Convert the following into scientific notation: q q 3. 0. 000984 13622. 05 0. 502 0. 0000715 Calculate the following. Give the answer in correct scientific notation. q q (2. 5 x 109)(6. 45 x 104) 4. 44 x 107 /2. 25 x 105
