Before we continue with our notes let’s complete a scenario. . . Scenario #1 The school has decided to raise the price of snacks that leadership sells to $5 in order to ensure more students start to buy school lunch. Answer the following questions on the LEFT hand side of your notebook: 1. How does this make you feel? 2. Why do you think the school is doing this? 3. How will students react? Why?
The Nullification Crisis In 1828, Congress passed a law raising tariffs (taxes on imported goods) Congress wanted to encourage more people make goods in America and buy more American products (ex. clothes) Northern states LOVED this because they made goods in their factories Southern states HATED the tariff because they were afraid other countries would tax or not buy their cotton
Was this tariff Constitutional? • Many southern states argued this tariff was unconstitutional because it favored ONLY the northern states • Jackson tried to fix the issue by creating a new, lower tariff in 1832 • This DID NOT fix the problem
South Carolina Threatens to Secede • South Carolina was NOT happy with the Tariff of 1828 and 1832 • They wanted to nullify, or reject, both tariffs • They even went one step further, and threatened to secede, or leave America, if the government tried to enforce the tariffs • Jackson would not allow this and passed the Force Bill, allowing him to use the army to collect the money, if needed. • South Carolina backed down
Before we continue with our notes let’s complete another scenario. . . Scenario #2 You are in charge of a small advertising company where the employees are contracted. One employee asks to renew their contract for employment three years early. In your opinion, this employee is the worst! The do not match the company’s mission and they have poor social skills. However, they are good at their job. Answer the following questions underneath Scenario #1 in your notebook: 1. What would you do? Why? 2. How do you think this would make the other employees feel?
Jackson Battles the Bank of the United States • Andrew Jackson saw himself as the champion of the people especially when it came to the Bank of the United States • The bank was owned by the federal government • Jackson believed the bank only benefited the rich men in the Eastern states • Jackson also HATED the bank’s President, Nicholas Biddle • The bank asked to renew their contract in 1832, FOUR YEARS EARLY!
What should Jackson do? • Jackson killed the bank by doing the following: 1. He did not sign the contract to renew the bank 2. He could not wait until 1836 to let the bank die 3. He took all the government’s money out of the bank and put them in other banks • Jackson claimed this as a victory for the poor farmers
