Course Descriptions • COURSE: DNT 242/3 – Machine Mechanism Elements • OBJECTIVES: The objective of the course is to prepare the students with the skills and knowledge in machine mechanism disciplines. The practical syllabus includes power transmission elements, shaft and bearing, drive gear, flexible elements drive, camshaft and follower and also linkages system.

Course Outcomes (CO) • CO 1: Able to create new point of view in the design philosophies for machine design. • CO 2: Able to calculate the characteristics of mechanical drive elements. • CO 3: Able to calculate the mechanism of mechanical elements and mobility of mechanical system.
Syllabus Chapter 1: Introduction to Machine Mechanism Elements ( WEEK: 1 - 2) • Principles of design analysis, mechanical drive and machine element design • Application of machine elements in mechatronic engineering focus on power transmission. Chapter 2: Shaft and Bearing (WEEK: 3 – 4) • Geometries for shaft • Force and torque exerted on shaft • Type and design life of bearing Chapter 3: Drive Gear (WEEK: 5 – 7) • Types of gears • Gear geometry and gear-tooth features SEMESTER BREAK (1 -5 JANUARY 2018)
Syllabus Chapter 4: Flexible Element Drive (WEEK: 8 - 10) • Basic feature of a flexible element drive • Belt drive system and types of belt drive Chapter 5: Camshaft and Follower (WEEK: 11 - 12) • Basic of camshaft and follower • Configuration and arrangement of camshaft and follower Chapter 6: Linkage Mechanism (WEEK: 13 - 14) • Function and type of linkage • Degree of freedom and mobility of linkage REVISION CLASS (26 FEB. – 02 MAR. 2018) EXAMINATION WEEK (05 – 23 MAR. 2018)
