Divisions of the Nervous System
The Central Nervous system n The central nervous system is made up of the Brain and the Spinal Cord n Meninges – connective tissues that wrapped around the brain and spinal cord n Cerebrospinal fluid – fluid that fills the space between the meninges and the brain and spinal cord – acts as a shock absorber
The Brain n The brain helps relay messages, process and analyze information n Made up of 4 main parts § The Cerebrum § The Cerebellum § The Brain Stem § The Thalamus and Hypothalamus
The Cerebrum n The largest part of the brain n Responsible for voluntary, or conscious, activities of the body n It is the site of intelligence, learning, and judgment.
The Cerebellum n The second largest part of the brain and is located at the back of the skull. n It coordinates and balances the action of the muscles so that the body can move gracefully and efficiently.
The Brain Stem n Connects n Controls the brain and spinal cord the flow of information between the brain and the rest of the body
The Thalamus and Hypothalamus n Are both found between the cerebrum and the brain stem. n Thalamus – receives messages from the sense organs and relays the information to the proper region of the cerebrum. n Hypothalamus – is the control center for recognition and analysis of hunger, thirst, fatigue, anger, and body temperature.
The Spinal Cord n The main communications link between the brain and the rest of the body n Connects n Reflexes the brain to the rest of the body are processed directly in the spinal cord. n Reflex – a quick, automatic response to a stimulus
The Peripheral Nervous System n Is made up of all the nerves and other cells that are not part of the brain and the spinal cord. n Divided division into sensory division and motor
The Sensory division n Transmits impulses from sense organs to the central nervous system
The Motor division n Is divided into two the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system n Somatic – regulates activities that are under conscious control n Autonomic – regulates activities that are automatic or involuntary.
