Diving into Mastery Guidance for Educators Each activity sheet is split into three sections, diving, deeper and deepest, which are represented by the following icons: Diving Deeper Deepest These carefully designed activities take your children through a learning journey, initially ensuring they are fluent with the key concept being taught; then applying this to a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities. These sheets might not necessarily be used in a linear way. Some children might begin at the ‘Deeper’ section and in fact, others may ‘dive straight in’ to the ‘Deepest’ section if they have already mastered the skill and are applying this to show their depth of understanding.
Aim • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Add 2 or More Fractions Diving Use the bar model to complete the calculation 2 5 7 + = 4 4 4
Add 2 or More Fractions Diving Draw and colour your own bar model to solve the calculation. 1 4 5 + = 7 7 7
Add 2 or More Fractions Diving Write the calculation to match this fraction model and calculate the answer. 1 3 2 6 + + = or 4 4 2 14
Add 2 or More Fractions Diving Use the number line to help solve this calculation. 10 1 5 5 or 3 3 + = 3 3 3 1 2 1 2 13 13 2 23 23 3 33 33 4 4 3 5 3 6 3 7 3 8 3 9 3 10 3 12 3 + 5 3
Add 2 or More Fractions Deeper Explain the mistake that has been made. 4 2 2 6 10 + 10 = 10 8 The answer should be 10 not 6 10. They have only added 2 of the fractions, instead of all 3.
Deeper Add 2 or More Fractions Which is the odd one out and why? 1 8 9 + = 9 9 9 4 3 7 + = 9 9 9 A is the odd one out because it equals and C both equal 7 9 . 2 4 1 7 + + = 9 9 9 or 1 whole whereas B
Deeper Add 2 or More Fractions Mark has used a bar model to help him calculate the answer to the calculation. Check his work, correct it and give him feedback. 2 1 2 + + = 5 5 5 or 1 whole Correct (√) or Incorrect (X)? X Feedback Your model does not match the calculation. Your model represents the 1 1 2 4 calculation 5 + 5 , which gives the answer 5. The answer should be 5 or 1 whole. You only coloured 1 part blue whereas, in fact, you should 5 have coloured 2 parts blue.
Add 2 or More Fractions Deepest Read the children’s clues and match them to the correct calculations. 1 1 1 + + = 8 8 8 3 8 Dean The answer to my calculation has an even denominator. 2 1 + = 7 7 3 7 Ling The answer to my calculation has an odd number in it. 4 8 12 + = 5 5 5 Kim The digits in the answer to my calculation total 10.
