Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: Fostering a Culture of Belonging at TRR
What is Diversity?
Why Does Diversity Matter?
Equality
Creating Equity for Disabled Paddlers with assistive technology and adaptive equipment
Can you think of some NEW ways that TRR could increase equity or access to paddling to other underserved groups by: • • treating them according to their specific needs? or by removing physical, social, or psychological barriers that might prevent them from paddling?
What is Inclusion?
A feeling of safety and belonging is critical to an individual’s ability to heal and to thrive in their community.
In-Group/Out-Group and unconscious preference
Common DEI Pitfalls: • Inclusion should not require assimilation • Diversity WITHOUT Equity and Inclusion is guaranteed to fail
Leadership and Culture at TRR Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course. Leaders who are good navigators are capable of taking their people just about anywhere. - John C Maxwell
Respect vs. Showing admiration for someone because of their abilities, qualities, or achievements is earned Dignity Recognizing an individual’s inherent human worth is given freely
• Take the initiative to educate yourself. Don’t expect others to do the work for you. • Listen with an open mind and heart to other people’s experiences. • Learn to recognize your own unconscious preferences. • Learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. • Be receptive to feedback. • If you see or hear something…stand up and speak up. • Be an example!
Accountability is not just being accountable for your own actions, it is holding others accountable for their actions as well.
Courageous TRR leaders work to make sure people can be themselves and feel a sense of belonging.
Our DEI Mission Team River Runner believes that ALL veterans deserve health and healing through paddlesports. The TRR Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee’s vision is to advance diversity and transform the organization into a more inclusive, healing space. As such, we are committed to fostering a culture and promoting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion through focused education; strategic outreach; and equitable policies, procedures, and other practices to ensure that ALL veterans, regardless of identity or status, feel safe and welcome.
