Diverse Cultures • While Indian cultures differed between tribes and regions most: – They saw themselves as part of nature, and viewed nature as sacred. • Most white Americans viewed the land as a resource to produce wealth. That was meant to be cultivated and owned. These differing views were the root of most conflict between the two groups (Owning land, Hunting)

America Forces Their Way In • Native American removal began in the early 1800’s when President Jackson moved the 5 tribes to Indian Territory (trail of tears) • This lasted until gold was discovered in Indian Territory, and Americans wanted to settle this area • In 1851 the government began to restrict Indians to smaller areas. – Indians were forced onto separate RESERVATIONS- specific areas set aside by the government. – No longer free to roam Indians faced suppression and poverty

Assimilation? • The government concluded that lasting peace would only come if Native Americans settled on farms and adapted to the civilization of the whites • To accelerate assimilation congress passed the Dawes General Allotment Act – Replaced the reservation system with an allotment system – Each Indian family was granted 160 acres – Congress hoped that Indians would embrace farming and land owning • Missionaries and school teachers were also sent in to encourage assimilation
