DIC is not a primary problem but the response of the clotting cascade to an underlying problem such as… 1. 2. 3. 4. Shock Blood transfusion reactions Burns OB emergencies
DIC - patho The cascade is set off by the release of tissue thromboplastin (or by thrombin) in response to injury to the endothelium lining of the tissues. It could be anywhere and from any source trauma/inflammation. The clotting cascade is triggered causing multiple thromboses and thrombi formation. = What is the result of multiple thrombi formation?
DIC - patho What do you think happens to all of the clotting factors and PLTS when they are busy with this response? When they are used up, what happens to the body with very low PLTS, & very low clotting factors.
DIC – S & S Bleed, bleed: from IV sites and woulds & from anywhere. Thromboses form with resulting infarcts. (Infarcts are cuased by the clotting off of the small vessels and sometimes the Large vessels causing strokes, TIAs, MIs. Petechiae Ecchymosis Hematuria
